About me:
A talented multi-instrumentalist in his own right, David Carr's mission
as a Record Producer is to make every Production hold it's own, both
artistically and sonically, against the world's stage and all within an
Australian budget.
He brings 25 years of experience and the
benefit of having learnt his craft whilst under guidance of experienced
producers and engineers- and all of this was paid for by the long gone
era of 1980's record company excess.
David has received much
praise by way of comparison. He has been called both Australia's Butch
Vig and Rick Rubin (the latter for the fact David can be recording a
'roots' outfit one week and Death Metal the next). Contemporaries see
parallels to the work of Steve Albini, Brendan O'Brien and Andy
Wallace. It is common for music industry Captains to assume David's
mixes are American or that his studio is all analog tape based.
Often,
when confronted by the extensive collection of retro, dependable and
bizarre equipment (see studio gear blog) at his studio Rangemaster,
some people do a double take. "We heard a world class sound on David's
latest work, so where is all bright and shiny new Rolls Royce
equipment?" David is quick to remind us that all recorded musical sound
must begin as a vision in the mind, so tools are only there to help one
realise that sound in the organic environment. Tools, both retro and
new, cannot create sounds, however people often make the mistake of
assuming David needs lots of very expensive new equipment to get his
trademark sound.
-He doesn't and he gets the same sound regardless of the tools, location OR budget.
Peter
Mazlin, A&R at Gotham records suggests David is one hit away from a
massive commercial career but despite Peter's observation, David Carr's
continuing allegiance to independent Artists is testament to his belief
in Producing 'honest' music and the rejection of the "cookie cutter"
ethos.
