A tough question. There are so many great writers. Look at the new & older music music of Nashville. Those songs contain the goods that I'm most influenced by. Know it or not, writers are the very heart of the Nashville music industry and without them artists wouldn't really have a lot to sing about.
Musically, I'm all over the map. I'm definitely influenced by the music that was in my house growing up which was jazz & rock & roll. The thing that I still can't figure out is where I got my love for southern musical grit. That's something that sneaks in about 1 out of 3 songs. And I love bluegrass too.
So there you have it. To list detailed names would certainly mean leaving out important influences. But in general, if they've had a long career in music I respect them. I know better than most how hard a job it can be. And even if I'm not wild about songs with a first listen, I can usually find the spark of what they do that makes them special and appreciate their efforts.
Due to lots of prodding… I’m going to tell you a few things about me today. Firstly, I’m happily married to a kick ass woman who’s as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. We have 5 kids, all doing what they’re supposed to in life and out in the world. I’m a democrat when voting and in heart, a registered republican, and would not shed a tear if Washington crumbled and we just had to start over again. I have become a cat lover thanks to the two that reside in our house. I think Sandra Bullock is the sexiest thing to ever hit the screen. I relate more to women than men, although I have many men friends that I would die for. I cry when I watch the movie Life’s A House. I hate any kind of credit and think we are actually headed in a good direction while we’re not borrowing money from banks or stores. We deserve only what we can buy for cash. My life’s balance sheet is made up of relationships and love, and to me that’s all that really matters. I believe Jesus Christ is my savior. I am not a fan of religions. I appreciate honesty over patronization. My parents were two of the most amazing people ever. My two sisters are both incredible women. I love musical people and that’s the reason I live in Nashville. I think fake boobs are very un-sexy. I am a genius at math, but don’t use that in my profession. I was told not to sing by a singing teacher once. I get to know people deeply and usually respect them for what I find. It might not be Hollywood, but it’s real and that what matters to me. I think we’re spending money in the middle east that should be spent developing new forms of energy for the USA and for new USA businesses that will take us into the future. I fear that I cannot keep pace in today’s information world. Nothing in this world can touch me like a great song does. I love sweets. I love spicy food like Mexican with jalepeno peppers or Indian food. I have to exercise every day to keep from gaining weight, and I hate that. I can get depressed when it rains too much and it’s dark outside. I don’t do well in seriously humid places and with too much heat, which is odd since I live in Nashville. I think that big business is ruining the US. I question technology and honestly think the Amish had it right. I use and love technology in music and promotion and actually embrace it in recording of music. But I am pretty sure we’d be better off without it. My birthday is Aug 3rd, which makes me a Leo, which makes people that know astrology wonder if someone got my birth date wrong. I drive a 22 year old Toyota that still looks great. I have decided that my Toyota and me belong together and therefore I will probably drive that until they take my license away from me. I miss the Gold Country of California where we raised our kids and lived in the snow country. I miss my friends from CA, but I am happier living in Nashville. When I write a song, I don’t write it for me. I write it for the listener. Compliments like… aw… you’re such a great writer mean little to me. I live to hear… that song helped me through my divorce, or, that song gives me hope. When songs are really adoptable, they’re great.
I never drank alcohol when I was in my twenties or thirties. My mother was an alcoholic, probably not due to genetic reasons, but mostly due to losing her first born son in a drowning accident. I never knew him. I am enthralled by any studies on the subject of addiction. I believe that Ibogaine is the greatest drug discovery since the antibiotic. I honestly wish we made more things in the USA. It seems to me like we’ve become a nation of brokers. I miss Artisans, their unique American work and pride of craftsmanship. I enjoy working in the music business and knowing that music is still the one thing we do in the USA that is king. I wish adults would respect music more and listen deeply like when they were teenagers. I dislike bullies and don’t put up with them. My first priority when I meet someone is to help them relax and be themself. I am thankful for Myspace every day. I have made more good friends here than I ever could have imagined.
