Influences
as a slide player, the influences are like everyone, starting with blind willie johnson, ry cooder, duane allman, and i must admit to stealing a lick now and then from sonny landreth. as a reg. guitar player. for jazz, joe pass kenny burrell, etc. for blues, blind blake b b king, albert king, larry carlton etc. country, james burton, and an endless list of great players. for funk, cornell dupree, and all the guys that you hear on old mowtown, etc.
Sounds Like
in a perfect world, as a singer, id' like to sound like a blend of lowell george, mike finnigan, greg allman, howlin' wolf, and albert king.
David Lamar; talented guitarist, singer, songwriter, and composer... has been hailed both by fans and critics as "the best kept cultural secret in the Western Hemisphere." Quite a statement to live up to, but David is as humble as he is superb at what he does, and catching one of his shows or just listening to his music is a definite testament to that.
David Lamar grew up in the Pleasure Point area of Santa Cruz, CA. He began classical and flamenco guitar studies at age 12, not moving to the steel stringed guitar until he reached the age of 20. It was during these formative years that he moved to Los Angeles and studied jazz with Joe Pass, vocal studies with Elizabeth Walberg, as well as harmony and theory with Bert Wilson. During these years as well, David got a bit of session work in the LA area, mostly in the folk and country fields. Besides his above mentioned mentors and teachers, David was also heavily influenced by the work of James Burton, BB King, Grant Green, and also Kenny Burell.
Leaving LA at the age of 26, David began a 25 year odyssey of traveling and working outside the U.S. as a sideman and session player Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and many countries in Western Europe. In 1986, David became an artist under his own name performing exclusively the songs he writes. He has toured for many years with the Arts America program, the National Endowment for the Arts for the US Government, and played all over South America and Europe. With them, he has toured as both an artist and lecturer of modern harmony and theory and has lectured at such places as the Pernanboco State Conservatory for Music in Recife, Brazil; and the State Conservatory of Music in LaPaz, Bolivia.
Today, David continues to teach and perform in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. His book, "Music Theory for Guitar Players" is currently in print and is also under revision for future re-release. Both the book and his music can be obtained through his website, www.davidlamarmusic.net.
