Astronomy and space exploration are high on my list as are history and folklore. | | Movies | I'm a big fan of classic film, including Murnau's Nosferatu, the Universal horror films and Hammer Studio's horror films from England. I love Ray Harryhausen's films, particularly the Sinbad films. Forbidden Planet is still a classic science fiction film. Among more recent movies, favorites include Master and Commander and Serenity.
| | Television | Any good, imaginative science fiction or fantasy television. I especially like Doctor Who (both the new series and classic), Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Babylon 5. I'm also a sucker for classic Star Trek and the new Battlestar Galactica is far better than it has any right to be. | | Books | I'm the author of five books: The techno-historical-horror novel Vampires of the Scarlet Order, The Solar Sea, which tells about humanity's first voyage to the outer planets, and the "Old Star" science fiction series: The Pirates of Sufiro, Children of the Old Stars, and Heirs of the New Earth.
In addition to the novels, I am also the editor of the
anthology Space Pirates and one of the co-authors
of the short story collection Blood Sampler.
My favorite books by others range from classics such as the Mars books of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Tolkien's Lord of
the Rings to great modern books such as The Skinner by Neal Asher and the Vlad Taltos novels of Steven Brust.
I also love small press books. Some recent favorites are The Two Devils by David B. Riley, Prophecy of Swords by M.H. Bonham, The Flu by Jacqueline Druga-Johnston, Blood is Thicker than Water by Wynette A. Hoffman, Zephyr Unfolding by Nicole Givens Kurtz, and Calm Before the Storm by Joe Lawson. |
