A bloke doing a very good impression of David Mackin
After nearly two years of solid work, the album The Poetry Pot is finally complete and ready for release from 20th August 2007 and, from December, through iTunes. It is an eclectic collection of finely crafted songs written, arranged and recorded by David Mackin with guest appearances from Ben Mackin, Laurence Mackin, Christopher Mackin, Michael Mackin, Dave Brown, Andy Brown, Chris Brown, Jayne Dale and Paul Haggath. Originally this was intended as an alternative interpretation of the concepts found in some of the most famous poems of Keats, Byron and Blake. However, the fabric of real life wove new subject matter into the songs and a new complex theme took over the original concept. This collection of 14 songs studies many musical genres: from Dance to Acoustic and Jazz to Indie. A title of ‘Alternative’ certainly seems a fitting description. Twelve of the songs are original compositions by David Mackin and two are covers by writers David very much admires. Nick Drake’s beautiful Northern Sky is given a faithful but personal realization and David And Don Was’ s Return To The Valley Of Out Come The Freaks injects the radical stylistic contrast that demonstrates the broad range of genre displayed by this very original artist. It’s all about the music but, as part of his Masters degree, David studied alternative ways to make the music accessible and marketable over the internet. He is very busy at the moment filming videos for each of the songs and they will rolled out when ready.
When not attempting to create ambitious epics such as this, David Mackin can be found playing Keyboards, Trumpet and Guitar with top North East band The Beer Pigs or simply trying to reclaim some of the sleep lost over these last two years. You can read his blog journaling the creation of the album and please keep an eye out for videocasts and podcasts with extra goodies coming in the very near future.
