Interests

  • General

Horror literature, experimental fantasy and surrealism, magic realism and any other isms that feature something curious happening to the familiar world. The bizarrer sort of classical music. Art and photography - doing it and looking at it. Japanese animation. Any animation in fact, so long as it isnt cosy old uncle Disney.

Those are my main interests, but i also have a tendency to flirt with many other fun things as well. I collect thundereggs and geodes, occasionally build model planes, grow crystals, practice experimental cookery . . . this list is ever changing!!

  • Music

I suppose I am a person who loves pop culture and it's art and writing - but I don't get on well with 90% of pop music, or whatever myriad of names it divides itself up into. Why, I cant be bothered to go into now - but get used to it!

Still, there are many other musics out there. here's a few names that I like:

Modern classical: George Crumb, Harry Partch, John Adams, Philip Glass, Schnittke, Scelsi, Birtwistle, Tan Dun, Takemitsu, Sculthorp . . .

Film: Danny Elfman, Don Davis, Scott Bradley (the old MGM cartoon music composer) etc . . .

  • Movies

..Japanese Animations: Serial Experiments: Lain - FLCL (Fooly Cooly/Furi Kuri) - Excel Saga - Paranoia Agent - Studio 4C works. Film directors: Peter Greenaway, David Cronenberg, Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton, Dario Argento (sometimes), Clive Barker. Also Jan Svankmajer and the Brothers Quay
  • Television

..David Attenborough documentaries. Some horizon and other science, technology and nature stuff. I have a bizarre love-hate relationship with big brother and some trash tv - possible horror story potential and brain-dead fun etc. But I tend to keep quiet about that!
  • Books

Thomas Tessier - especially Father Panic's Opera Macabre and Ghost Music. The Cornelius Quartet by Michael Moorcock. What the Giants were Saying by David Rix :-). John Shirley. Ramsey Campbell. Tom Piccirilli. Jeffrey Thomas. Thomas Ligotti. Have just finished Terry Lamsley's Conference with the Dead, which was superb. The list goes on!

Classic American writers like Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith. The House of Sounds by M P Shiel. Sarban. Arthur Machen and the ghost stories of M R James.

Young British horror writers. Writers brave enough to take the self-publishing route and make it work (there are a few of them)!

Books from Tartarus Press in the UK, and Delirium Books in the US

Blurbs

About me:

..

I am a young British writer in the areas of 'Horror', 'Metahorror' and modern Magic Realism/Speculative Fiction. All just damn words really - and for a writer I really dislike WORDS in unnecessary situations - but it gives you an idea. This blog is where you can find out a little about me and keep up with my occasional news – but more importantly, with my general scribblings. . . bad-tempered (sorry, humorous!) rants, which are actually a chance for me to have fun and shout a bit without the constraints of fiction writing (which i tend to take deadly seriously). Shouting is good for the soul! Plus, of course, general quirky stuff, laboured iconoclastic grousing and even some tiny 'instant' storylets when they pop into my head.

My first book was released a while back - What the Giants were Saying - and it got a good if sometimes slightly bewildered reaction! You can read some (rather unsatisfyingly) small excerpts of this on the eibonvale Press website here.

This is the first public appearance of my recurring character, the hugely eccentric Feather - a woman subsumed in creativity, magic, madness and the whole spectrum of human experience. Now I am working on my next book, a big (very big) set of linked stories about her that seems to be taking forever.

I also run a very small slow but dedicated publishing house called Eibonvale Press. It's on myspace as well (see my friends), so if you join me here, join that as well! Then buy something! Trust me, it will be worth it!.

I do all my own art for the Eibonvale Press titles - and the success of those has taken me rather by surprise, i have to say. I am thinking now that i should love to work with other small publishers as well and perhaps do more with digital art and photomanipulation. I also do a lot of photography. You can see that, and some older artworks, in my main gallery - online at www.eibonvale.co.uk

Hi! Just wanted to make sure all my friends know that my 2nd horror novel SACRIFICE is now in stores everywhere, including Amazon.com! I hope you'll check out this debauched and demonic horror ride! Here are a couple reviews it's gotten so far:

“SACRIFICE is a full frontal assault on your senses. It is a dark, brutal, bloody and terribly frightening book. Everson went deep into some dark abyss to bring this book to the light of day.... I highly recommend SACRIFICE.”
    —Famous Monsters of Filmland

“John Everson manages in SACRIFICE to dispense buckets of blood, provide edgy perversity, and walk the tenuous tightrope of horror and sex without falling: It’s rather an amazing feat.” –Hell Notes

Christmas is a Time for Magic!!

I've stepped a little outside my normal "horror writer" persona this week :-) To celebrate the season, I've created a Holiday Madness page, with links to a free Christmas short fantasy story ("Christmas, The Hard Way"), a rock 'n' roll holiday song I wrote and recorded a few years ago ("Show Me Christmas"), holiday wallpaper for your computer and more. You can hear the song and follow the link from my MySpace page, or just click the banner below. Darkest Holidays to you!

"I used to think that the universe was so unfair. But then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if the universe were fair and we actually deserved all the terrible things that happen to us? Now I take great consolation in the unfairness and general hostility of the universe"
