On all my songs I play all the instruments and do all the vocals and backing vocals
.
Hopefully when I do my live shows later in 2009, I will have recruited an ever changing line-up of musicians to back me and help me to produce my heavily orchestrated stuff on stage, so that loose conglomerate will be know as the The PIMPERNELS
Influences
Influences include... sixties crooners such as Mel Torme, Jack Jones, Frank Sinatra, Scott Walker and Johnnie Ray. Love James Bond Themes and various film scores and dramatic music - avant garde and classical. Also fond of the ladies like Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey, Patsy Cline, Peggy Lee, Dinah Washington.
Love girl groups and northern soul, but grew up in the late 70's and early 80's - so influenced by Blondie, Soft Cell/ Marc Almond, Siouxsie & The Banshees, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Billy MacKenzie / Associates, Blancmange, Yazoo, Scritti Politti, ABC, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths.
I like Serge Gainsbourg, Elbow, Rufus Wainwright, Mercury Rev, Goldfrapp, Gavin Friday, Filthy Dukes.
Sounds Like
Scott Walker I guess, mixed with a bit of Marc Almond - well that's what people tell me. But I guess I'll leave that for other people to decide.
I started learning piano at age 9, then took up guitar in my teens. Subsequently went on to learn drums, bass, accordion, hammer dulcimer, harp, banjo, mandolin, vibes, marimbas, glockenspiels, and really enjoy writing string arrangements. Would like to work in film and cinema music too.

Hello David,i'm fine thanks,i too have had a busy weekend recording and all this week i am working in studio too , your new songs indeed be appreciated to many people, i want listen soon. Luigi
I'm not bad thanks, Just finished a portrait for fellow myspacer Pete P, plenty more artwork in the pipeline. Too many ideas, not enough time.
and while normal people were sleeping on a sunday morning,I was watching Countryfile and I came across an instrument called the Northumbrian smallpipes,I thought they sounded very synthesized.
Thank you for listening and posting your kind words. Like the Kirsty MacColl comparison. Never heard that one before but I thought she was great. Sorry for your loss of a friend there. That can't have been easy. I saw a documentary about her once and she came across as genuinely lovely person - Johnny Marr clearly thought the world of her.
Very impressed with your stuff. Love "Let It Rain, Let It Pour", "Firebird" and "Glycerin Tears" in particular. Great classic velvety crooner voice and ambitious arrangements. Interesting to read you're looking to recreate this live. Sounds like a challenge but the results should be spectacular.
Upon listening to ye olde songs, I'm liking the vocals on Firebird and also the chirpy dinky melodies. I wouldn't mind at all doing some Pimpernel artwork or sleeves etc. I'll stay tuned to DS & the scarlet pimpernels. I've been leaving comments on The Killers page for months trying to get them to view my artwork, they're not having any of it,probably too busy in Las Vegas.
Thanks for adding me,l ove the tunes, glad you enjoyed my music, nice to see you here and on ReverbNation, been giving you plays over there, have a great week and weekend, Cheers!
I encourage anyone that finds this page, or adds David Simnel, to listen to his tunes, as it is well worth taking the time to do so--a quality artist!

Artists on there take the time to listen to each other's stuff, leave
meaningful feedback, and actually communicate. Fans keep coming back,
and there are lots of ways to chart your progress, check on who is
listening to your tunes, and endless ways to cross-promote with other
artists.
Artists really do need to be both on here and on reverbnation, and if
you are a fan and like to get a response from artists when you send
emails, that is much more likely to happen over on reverbnation.com
Myspace is equally important, but myspace will work far more
effectively for artists if they are also on reverbnation, and the two
sites are used in tandem.
There are over 300,000+ artists on there now, and it is destined to be
the biggest of all the free music sites; all the tools it has for
charting your progress, as well as the different music charts it has,
which are given at local, national and global level, really help you to
plan your promotion and marketing strategies, so get over there, track DAVID SIMNEL down, and add yourself to the PANGAEA'S PEOPLE
site on there, which is a collective showcase site for artists on
reverbnation and myspace, and myself and other artists will direct you
to artists and fans who will fan you, actually listen to your tunes,
and leave meaningful feedback free of self-advertising!
