    David's Interests
General

Can't think of any interests that I have, other than Morris Dancing, folk music, making videos, web development, playing the melodeon, trying to play bass guitar, Watford FC, the Wiltshire Village of Avebury and surrounding area, long distance walks and short distance walks.

Music

I have a large box which I am near constantly squeezing in one way or another. It gives me great pleasure.

The box is called a Melodeon, and is a member of the accordion family of free reed instruments. It is very popularly used by chaps with beards in Morris sides and folk bands, particularly those associated with ceilidh dancing. There have recently risen some downy faced melodeon heroes who have enlivened the scene, such as Will Hampson, John Spiers and the incomparable Saul Rose. But the old guard are still proper little devils with a 'diatonic accordion' (a posh name for a melodeon that people only use when they get famous or artistic); in Morris terms, where fame does not stretch much further than the folk circuit, there are legends such as Ian Dedic and Frank Lee who have double the normal number of fingers, and then there are the more widely known masters, such as John Kirkpatrick, who cut his melodeon teeth in Morris, before moving on to immortality, and Tony Hall, who not only has double the finger count, but also has fantom hands on which he can call to play extra bits and make a jobbing Morris player feel very inadequate.

I've been playing for Woodside Morris Men and Chiltern Hundreds Morris sides for the last eight years, and have recently been lucky enough to play with Rivington Morris, from near Bolton (apparently that is better than 'from' Bolton!), on the odd occasion.

Outside of the Morris/folk scene I have made some tentative moves towards getting involved in a band, but am so far yet to perform, other than the odd solo spot at The Horns, Watford.

I know Chris from The Grand Union Music Show, who I am hoping to persuade to let me join in for a few numbers at a gig sometime in the near future, as repayment for lending him my box for a recent recording.

   David's Blurbs
About me:

Born in 1966, in the old maternity hospital, Kings Close, Watford, I was a very ugly baby, as even my own mother will admit. I was taken away from her immediately after birth, and, narrowly avoiding a coming together with the hospital bucket, I was taken up to ITU to be placed in an incubator, and for learned men with lots of letters after their name to come and 'observe' me. Apparently my head looked like two coconuts snogging (censored).

A couple of days later, my mother overheard two worthless and evil old harridans talking about a 'hideous bucket baby' being kept up in the hospital's attic, watered by a blind, and very charitable nurse, who didn't understand what the strange sucking sounds were that the lumpen child was making. Of course, it never occurred to my Mum that they may have been talking about me. Until a day or so later, when she came into ITU, screamed, and lay on the floor saying something about monkeys.

Thankfully, it did not take me long to get over the trauma of being born outside of normality, and within twenty seven years, I was completely free of any lasting mental scars. My Mother, however, still wakes at night in cold sweats, shouting "we're gonna need a bigger bucket!"

Anyway, I have now formed into a normal human being, physically, though some of the horror and revulsion levelled at me in those early days is again a familiar part of my life, as I have taken up the noble art of Morris Dancing and adopted the inappropriate-antiquarian hobby of the Binner. As well as that, I occasionally dance a bit of Salsa, maintain my own web page, make home videos that the family can watch, and am training to become a Therapeutic Radiographer.

Who I'd like to meet:

The chef at the Flower Drum, Market Street, Watford. I'd like to ask him how he makes his crispy chilli beef so damned delicious.

Bob Stevens, who I worked with at EMP, Muswell Hill, because he still owes me a fiver.

I'd quite like to talk to Tony Blair about how the effect of having a bit of power sucks all the idealism out of you, but I wouldn't really want to meet him - so maybe a telephone call would be a better idea.
