At Ryles in July, I had Ray Santisi on piano, Barry Smith on bass, Casey Scheuerell on drums, Jeff Stout on trumpet, and Larry Baione on guitar.
Influences
I started wanting to sing jazz when I heard Bobby McFerrin do his thing. Then I got into Ella Fitzgerald and sang along with her recordings. Take 6 is the harmony group that got me into vocal group singing. Mel Tormé is my role model of the complete package: vocalist, jazz stylist, arranger, jazz instrumentalist, entertainer, songwriter. He's who I want to be when I grow up, except I'm not sure how you grow up to be a popular quality jazz/pop singer in the 21st century.
Sounds Like
I've had people tell me I sound like Mel Tormé, which pleases me to no end. Also, some people say Chet Baker, and I'm down with that as far as the musicianship goes, but I'd like to think that I have a lot more vocal power than Chet. Others people have mentioned are Kurt Elling, who I love but don't think I sound like in the slightest, and Michael Bublé, who I don't really know anything about.
David Thorne Scott, singer, pianist, songwriter and arranger, is Associate Professor of Voice at Berklee College of Music. He performs, teaches and lectures at jazz clubs, concert halls, schools, and national and international jazz education festivals.
"Shade," David's debut album, was chosen as a Top 5 Vocal Jazz CD of 2004 by the Jazz Education Journal. "I was knocked out. The jazz singer/arranger is also a composer/lyricist who is a welcome change from the more predictable vocal jazzers in the competitive vocal milieu," wrote Herb Wong.
His 2007 album "DYAD" is a collection of jazz standards and original songs, performed as duets with pianist Mark Shilansky. "Clear diction, warm tones and stellar vocal control over each note, no excuses... strong delivery and fabulous lyrics," said Jazz Sensibilities, June 2, 2008
David performs in the jazz vocal groups Syncopation (www.jazzsyncopation.com) and Vocalogy (www.vocalogy.net). Syncopation, which the Boston Globe calls “the 21st century Manhattan Transfer or Lambert, Hendricks and Ross,” performed with the Boston Pops on their 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular. Syncopation’s “Wonderful You” and Vocalogy’s “Distilled” are available at CDBaby.com and iTunes.
David's arrangements for jazz choir are published in the "Classic Vocal Jazz" series by Hal Leonard Corporation. His arrangements for Vocalogy are published by University of Northern Colorado Jazz Press.
In 2006, David received a Berklee Faculty Fellowship and Recording Grant to study, transcribe, perform and record vocal group arrangements from the 1930s and 1940s.
David was a finalist in the professional division of the 2003 Boston Area Song and Aria Festival sponsored by the National Association of Teachers of Singing. He is a member of the Philovox Choir, which records the choral music of the E.C. Schirmer Publishing Company.
David received a B.A., Magna Cum Laude in English and music from Drew University, an A.A.A. in Professional Music from the School for Music Vocations (under Phil Mattson), and a M.M. in Jazz Vocal Performance from the University of Miami (under Larry Lapin). He continues his studies in voice with Mark Baxter.

Haha... I actually miss it a lot! I'm working on a Masters in Music Ed from Boston University in their distance learning program. Too much writing, not enough singing! =D Funny- I was just thinking of you today for two reasons- I'm going to show my class that video of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Have you got that song down yet? Also, I was wondering if you would be OK with the ensemble I direct doing your arrangement of Bye Bye Blackbird, and me making a few adjustments so that there are four parts. What do you think???
