I am a fingerstyle guitarist with influences from Jazz, Pop, Classical, Folk, etc. The main thing is that it's Solo Guitar. Some pieces are more influenced by Pat Metheny, some by Pierre Bensusan, some by Michael Hedges. Every piece is based on the music I am studying at the time. David Youngman has studied many different instruments throughout his life but always seems to come back to the guitar. “I feel a connection with it that I never get from any other instrument. It just feels like me.” Youngman's dad had a few guitars laying around the house so he eventually began to teach himself to play. This lead to being involved in many different local groups around Lakeview, MI, where David grew up.
David got involved with a group known as Afterthought with his brother and friend in 2002. Known as Afterthought, they had some ideas for some creative Jazz and Bluegrass instrumental music and ended up playing their Jazzgrass music all around Michigan. Afterthought released two albums: Out in the Rain (2003) and Jazzgrass (2005). Their album Jazzgrass became the most played local album on WYCE Grand Rapids Radio. During these years David also worked to complete a bachelors degree in Guitar and Trumpet Performance from Spring Arbor University. David ended up performing and practicing so much throughout these years that he developed some hand problems. This eventually led to the end of his playing for a few months and the end of serious playing for about two years.
In April of 2006, David came across Brian Roberts, a great classical guitar teacher, in Ann Arbor, MI. Brian has since helped him relieve his hand pain and learn to play with much greater ease as well as greater musicianship. He also began studying the Alexander Technique, a known method for effortless and balanced body use, with Michelle Obrecht of Ann Arbor.
Youngman has developed a great passion for solo guitar music. “There are so many beautiful solo guitar pieces that I feel many people are unaware of. I find it amazing what one guitar can do and I love presenting these pieces: whether folk, classical, or jazz.” Along with great works from the past and present David also seeks to push solo guitar music to new levels by composing his own works.
In David's career, he has studied with and worked with many great musicians including John Stropes, a leading figure in fingerstyle guitar; Rene Izquierdo; Michael Gulezian; Petar Jankovic; Brian Roberts; and Derek Brown, jazz saxophonist and long time friend of David's.
David Youngman continues to pursue his career as a full time musician living in Hillsdale, MI with his wife Liz and son Logan. He loves being out running, biking, and swimming. David also creates in other ways besides music such as painting and building furniture. He records his own music in his home studio and has released the album Solo Guitar in 2008 from these recordings. “I have so many ideas that I want to make a reality and share with others so that's what I plan to do with my life.”

Hey David, thanks for the encouragement! It's been a fun shift to be able to present these songs backed by a band. Any cool holiday gigs coming up? Seems like now would be a busy time of year for musicians of your caliber. Funny how people tend to appreciate high quality music more around the holidays....
David... it is a blessing to meet you! My wife is from Michigan, U.P. and I graduated from Rudyard in the UP as well. Spend some time at EMU is Yipsi as well :-)
