Blurbs

About me:

On the 25th January 2008, during the World Economic Forum in Davos, a group of powerful and influential women met to talk about some of the key issues facing women globally today.

At the fore of these issues, many identified by the Millennium Development Goals set out at the G7 summit, were the devastating statistics surrounding maternal mortality.

Mothers, the very heart of every social network, are dying. Daily. Minute-by-minute.

This is not due to a lack of scientific or healthcare knowledge but purely a matter of poor economics and lack of resource. Something can be done but needs strong support and conviction to truly change the future.

What was shared at this dinner were the facts and the statistics behind maternal mortality, and also the hope for the future.

On this site, find out more about what went on during the meal, the real truth behind maternal mortality and find out how you can help in the fight to make a difference.

The Facts:

1. 536,000 women a year die through pregnancy or birth related complications.

2. In the most developed countries, 1 in 48,000 mothers die in childbirth.

3. In the poorest parts of Africa, 1 in 7 mothers die in childbirth.

4. Every minute around the world 1 woman dies due to pregnancy related complications

5. The risk of death in children under five is doubled if their mothers die in childbirth

6. The social cost of maternal and newborn mortality is US$15bn per year, yet the deaths could be prevented by spending around US$4-6bn
