Bob Taverner The Folk Mag review( Davy Cowan Fragile People PPCD003)
'Fragile People' is Davy Cowans hugely enjoyable debut album, intended to launch him on what will, I sincerely hope, be a very successful solo career.
Davy made his name with Highland band, Coinneach, but if youre therefore expecting a Celtic Rock album youll be in for a surprise. The album features fourteen self-penned songs based on a wide variety of themes and experiences, some of them stunningly original. In amongst songs of love lost and found, train journeys and boat trips, theres The Gatecrasher about, yes, gate crashing parties (or even a wake) and the hilarious, The Likes of Me, a song about an anorak-wearing train spotter that left me in stitches.
Davys approach to song writing is spot on straight forward words and catchy tunes that soon have you humming along. My favourites include the opening track, Moving On, the beautifully crafted Song for Summer and Each Day I Die, and indeed the title track itself. That said, there simply isnt a weak song on the album.
The album is well-produced and features some fine musicianship as well as being a fine musician in his own right, Davy is well supported by a number of his friends and colleagues. He performs his songs with a raw energy and zest, it says here Id certainly agree with that! A word of warning though, as this review is for a folk-oriented website, Davy includes amongst his influences not only folk and country but also rock and punk. This isnt an album for the folk purist or, indeed, for any of those who like their music neatly pigeon-holed. However, if you simply like music thats fun, thought-provoking and original, youll thoroughly enjoy Fragile People.

Hi, This is me, Davy Cowan: Troubadour, Poet, Musician, Post Punk Gent, a throw back from the 70’s & 80's. Grew up in a world where Johnny Cash, Hank Williams & The Dubliners took centre stage, in a household where Country & Western were the 2 main genre’s of music listened to. 1979 was a strange year which saw me enrol as a disciple in the John Peel institute of fine music. Under the cover of darkness, beneath my bed sheets on many a school night, I started listening to the likes of The Clash , Stiff Little Fingers, Athletico spizz 80, Crispy Ambulance & The Fall as well as a host of other fine bands at the time too good to mention.
In the late ninety’s when others around me were settling down into a more subdued lifestyle, I decided to give up my day job & make the transition into the madcap music world extravaganza, recording three momentous albums & touring the UK & Europe with the Highland Cult Folk/Rock band Coinneach.
I released my first solo album “Fragile People” in 2005 & I’m currently working on the follow up, I‘ll keep you posted.
A selection of my music including the album 'FRAGILE PEOPLE' is available for download at www.scotloads.co.uk, click the scotloads banner to take you straight there. Also available to buy online at www.davycowan.com or from HMV & all good record stores.
"With the Earth finally drained of all it's natural resources and the
warnings of yesterday a faint whisper in the breeze, our spent hopes and
aspirations of a perfect World lies wounded and decaying, an industrial
graveyard created by mans overwhelming hunger for greed and power. The key
to the door leading to a land so pure, lost in the dark murky waters,
that once was a clear river, rich with life,
a free gift thrown back in the face of Mother Nature." Davy Cowan
