| About Dawn Jewell |
|
Began studying piano at age 8, and performing on voice and piano at 13. Born and raised in rural Wisconsin... I graduated from UW-Madison, where my horizons were expanded by this progressive oasis in the Midwest. I moved to Seattle in 1989 and lived there until 2003, when I relocated to my current home in Hawaii on the island of Kaua'i.
Over the 14 years I lived in Seattle I spent many of them DJing on non-commercial radio stations including mostly KCMU (now KEXP) which back then had very adventurous programming and broadened my musical horizons 100-fold. I was also involved in a number of micro 'pirate' radio stations, which ultimately led to the creation of Low Power FM licensing by the FCC (or LPFM stations).
Throughout the 90's, I began writing more original music and performing solo, made a number of appearances as a live DJ at parties and events, and began performing as a member of some local bands.
In 1997, I recorded a few of my original songs while spending the summer in a cabin outside of Fairbanks, Alaska. The tracks recorded in the "little Blue Cabin" in AK, were transferred to Seattle and 2 of them ultimately ended up on my first solo release "Engineer Number Five", which I completed in 2000:

"Engineer Number Five" is a self produced recording of original songs that are fully realized and arranged with a number of very talented backing musicians. I was fortunate to be joined by several of those musicians from 2001 thru 2004 in a variety of live performances. We have also collaborated on some of my newer songs, which I recorded in 2004 while visiting Seattle for a month.
Here on Kaua'i, I enjoy hosting a radio show "The Open Jewel Box" on local radio station
KKCR: http://www.kkcr.org
The Open Jewel Box airs Mondays 3-5pm (HST) on alternating weeks and is an eclectic mix of musical 'gems' open to any genre. Feel free to tune in!
