Musically speaking, my influences range from Abba to Zepplin. Growing up, I remember listening to so many different kinds of music, I have to thank my parents (mainly my mother) for giving me such a wide variety of music to appreciate. I don't think music and the arts get nearly enough emphasis in schools and I am hoping for changes. It seems, however, to be getting worse instead of better (I will save my ranting on that subject for another time).
The Indigo Girls have been a major influence over the last 10 years. It was from them that I learned I was not alone in this world. They spoke my mind when I couldn't manage to find the words and helped me through some very difficult times. I loved their songs their harmonies and the fact that they seemed to break the mold. They were not 90 pound supermodels. They were real people, and that gave me hope.
I have to admit that over the years one of my all time favorites has to be Anne Murray. (Anne, PLEASE COME OUT ALREADY!) I still love her, though, because if it had not been for her, I probably never would have tried a lot of the things I have tried. Between Anne Murray and Patsy Cline, I believed there was a place for an powerful alto in popular music. Their velvety voices give me that gold standard to strive towards.
Another contemporary artist whom I just adore is Sarah Maclachlan, I remember going to see Lilith Fair in its first year and marveling at the wonder created by these powerful and talented women. Sarah has a dreaminess about her voice and music that I find truly beautiful. Her way of telling stories in song is compelling and touching.
Ani Difranco is another artist for whom I have the deepest respect. From the beginning she has refused to compromise and broken many rules along the way. She is an acoustic guru, a musical chemist. Her honesty is overwhelming. The spirit with which she sings and plays gives her music a stark realism that many popular artists are lacking.
My name is Dawn Michelle, obviously, and I am a singer/songwriter. I play guitar (mostly acoustic) and a smattering of piano (only when necessary). My real love, however, is singing. My mother always said I was singing before I could talk (and that was pretty early.. and I haven't stopped either since). Let's get the basics out of the way. I am a lesbian, and semi-feminist. What that means is that I strongly believe in the rights of women and furthering women in society; BUT, and this is IMPORTANT, I am not a man-hater or anything silly like that. I just think that everyone should get equal treatment! Not just in the United States, but all over the world and I do not think that is happening yet; so, until it does I will continue to think of myself as a semi-feminist and political correctness be damned!! :) If you are interested in hearing any other of my rantings, of which there will eventually be tons, please click

I have spent time in a variety of places where I have played music or sang in some form or another. There are many people who will likely remember me from a little town in the midwest called Springfield, Missouri, where I played at a variety of venues from The Magic Bean to The Outland and The Bar Next Door.
These days I am living, happily, in upstate New York with my wife (we were married last summer), our cat, dog, and the oldest guinea pig on the planet. I had been busy with school and life in general for a few years. I am about to graduate, after going back to school as a non-traditional student. I will have a double major in Anthropology and Biology and a certificate in Evolutionary Studies to show for my efforts and I am applying to graduate school to focus in animal behavior. But no matter what else has happened I can never sem to stay away from my first love, music.
I am writing new songs which will hopefully be recorded soon and am planning some collaborative projects with a variety of artists that are very exciting.
There will be much happening in the coming year. I will be uploading more songs and there may actually be some show dates sometime soon as well!
