Influences

Calavera de la Catrina (colorized) by José Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913), a Mexican engraver and illustrator.

Posada's best known works are his calaveras, which often assume various costumes, such as the Calavera de la Catrina, the "Calavera of the Female Dandy," which was meant to satirize the life of the upper classes during the reign of Porfirio Díaz. Most of his imagery was meant to make a religious or satirical point. Since his death, however, his images have become associated with the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos, the "Day of the Dead" and draw on Native American motifs.

About Day of the Dead Festival
Welcome to the official MySpace page of the Day of the Dead Festival ROCK THE DEAD, benefiting the Texas Musicians Museum. The event was held Saturday, November 3, 2007 at the Ridglea Theater in Fort Worth TX.

We wish to thank our Friends of the Dead for joining us for our first Rock The Dead event. The performances by our tribute bands were more awesome that we ever dreamed. The Dead were truly honored. Special thank you to the Stevie Ray Vaughan Remembrance Ride & Concert for joining us in celebrating Stevie with Voodoo Blue. Layne Staley received special attention with a museum quality display from The Donkey Show. Mindy from Deep Woods Apothecary blessed visitors to our Ofrendas with a Native American ritual sage smudging (yeah, that SMELL lol). Hilary Leigh took facepainting to the next level with blacklight paints. JingleFairy of Faery Unique Hemp Jewelry amused festival goers with her Chupacabra in a Box. Regina Best with I'll Get It Errand Service served up some tasty tamales. Laser Ed astounded us with his amazing video and light show. And Museum Director Thomas Kreason played the proof for us that rock 'n roll was born in Texas! Check out all the great photos from DallasObserver.com and 3-D Digital Imaging [click here]

The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos, Día de los Difuntos or Día de Muertos in Spanish) is a holiday celebrated in many parts of the world, typically on November 1 (All Saints' Day) and November 2 (All Souls' Day). Since music is so important to Dia de los Muertos, this year we added a third day, November 3 - All Musicians' Day!

Though the subject matter may be considered morbid from the perspective of some other cultures, celebrants typically approach the Day of the Dead joyfully, and though it occurs at the same time as Halloween, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, the traditional mood is much brighter with emphasis on celebrating and honoring the lives of the deceased. Learn more about the Day of the Dead on our website... [click here]

Monsters of Rock Since celebrating is the focus of Dia de los Muertos, we celebrate the lives of several great music artists who are no longer with us. The Day of the Dead Festival featured performances by tribute acts that honor our "Monsters of Rock" including two who were native Texans. The list of “Monsters” honored are: Bon Scott of AC/DC, John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Randy Rhoads of Ozzy Osbourne’s band, Cliff Burton of Metallica, Layne Staley of Alice in Chains, John Lennon and George Harrison of The Beatles, and five members of The Grateful Dead - Jerry Garcia, Ron McKernan, Keith Godchaux, Brent Mydland, and Vince Welnick.

The tribute acts featured at this year’s Day of the Dead Festival are a collection of North Texas’ finest performers, some are nationally recognized with long established productions.

Our live music tribute acts are: BACK IN BLACK (AC/DC), SWAN SONG (Led Zeppelin), VOODOO BLUE (Stevie Ray Vaughan), ME & MY MONKEY (The Beatles), KOZMIC THRILLS (Janis Joplin), THE DEAD THING (The Grateful Dead), ALCOHOLLICA (Metallica), BLIZZARD OF OZZ (Ozzy Osbourne), and THE DONKEY SHOW (Alice in Chains). You can hear audio samples of these amazing bands here on MySpace.

Two stages were utilized in the main theater area and one stage in the upstairs lounge. In addition to live electric performances, four of the bands also played acoustic sets on the stage in the upstairs lounge. The music was truly a magical experience.

Texas Musicians Museum We are proud to produce our Day of the Dead Festival to benefit the state’s only all Texas musicians museum and research center. Called "The Outlaw Museum of Texas Music," the Texas Musicians Museum celebrated its Grand Opening this summer in historic Hillsboro, Texas just down the road from the former Hill County Jail where Elvis was once a guest. Texas musicians have had a profound effect on American music and culture. The TMM brings their stories to life, weaving their experiences, styles and influences together. Through quality displays, visitors can trace the thread of Bob Wills' Texas swing to Buddy Holly's 50's rock and its influence on the likes of The Beatles and Eric Clapton. They can pick another thread and follow back to Janis Joplin, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and even further back to the early bluesmen such as T-Bone Walker and Blind Lemon Jefferson. Did you know that rock 'n roll was born in Texas? It's true! Just ask TMM’s executive director Thomas Kreason to play the proof for you!

The TMM presented the The Texas Music Experience Roadshow at our festival this year, a custom designed trailer with a walk-thru display. The display featured never before seen photographs from the Texas International Pop Festival, which included Led Zeppelin and Janis Joplin. Learn more about the TMM at www.TexasMusiciansMuseum.com.

Music conveys emotion in every language in the universe.
If it needs words to convey emotion, it is NOT music.
