We are the Desert Communities chapter of MECDA--Middle Eastern Cultural and Dance Association. Located in the Antelope Valley in Southern California, we are dedicated to promoting Middle Eastern dance, commonly known as Belly Dance.
We produce belly dance events like Dance in the Desert, where dancers from all over converge to perform, shop, take workshops, and just spend time gabbing. At the event we also collect items for the local domestic abuse refuge--clean and useful clothing, new toiletries and make up, etc.
Twice a year we sponsor dance workshops with some of the very best teachers California has to offer (and that's a LOT!) to promote dance education. We've hosted teachers such as Zahra Zuhair, Kamaal, Jim Boz, Aziza Said, and Princess Farhana, just to name a few.
Every Christmas holiday we produce a charity fundraiser show called "Jingle All the Way", to benefit local disadvantaged children. Admission is $5 or a new, unwrapped toy. Further donations are always gratefully accepted. Put us on your calendar for Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007 at the Palmdale Cultural Center, 7 pm to 9pm. More details? Who I'd like to meet: Belly dancers of every variety! Cabaret dancers, Tribal dancers, Goth dancers, Fusion dancers, New dancers, Experienced dancers. Dancers of every age and shape--come as you are. Come lend your particular, unique beauty and passion.
And we would not neglect those who support the dance: Musicians, costumers, family members, patrons of the art, theater folks, venue operators, and those most prized and rare birds: Lighting and sound technicians!
You can find out more about upcoming events, local dancers, and MORE!
