Member Since12/2/2006
Band Members .............I am a singer/songwriter/guitarist with definite blues leanings built on many years of lovingly listening to and playing, alone and with ensembles, in and around Montreal Quebec, Canada. The musical styles of artists originating from the south and southeast of the United States in the first half of the twentieth century is my chosen form of expression. I play classic and original blues, rags, folk and country, sung and played fingerstyle on six and twelve string acoustic and electric guitars and with slide on my resonator and lapsteel. I also perform early Gospel songs and Spirituals solo (old time street singer style) and in duos. My recent shows have been thematic concerts performed with stories and a slide show. My most recent shows have been ”Josh White: The First Folk Blues Star, Café Society, Hellhound On My Trail, Laughing Just To Keep From Crying: Humor And The Blues, Muddy Waters-Hootchie Cootchie Man” and several more performed solo and with special guest. A few times a year I also do a show called “Soup2Nuts” which features music from country blues to Jazz and Rock’n’Roll, done in lighthearted fashion.
InfluencesI would have a hard time pinpointing the artists that shaped my style and approach because there are so many, but here are the men and women that inspired to go deeper into the music I love: Big Bill Broonzy, Josh White, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Skip James, John Hammond, Reverend Gary Davis, Mance Lipscomb, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Fats Waller, Johnny Winter, several Johnsons, Memphis Minnie McCoy, Mississippi John Hurt and so many, many more......................................

Josh White Night at the Mad Monk Cafe May 2008. Deacon George on guitar and Daniel Berube on drums playing "Hard Times".

Deacon George and Sheldon Crane - Two Trains Running - at Mad Monk Cafe July 2007.

Deacon George Tearin' It Up At Smoke Meat Pete's In Montreal in June 2007

Deacon George on guitar, Sheldon Crane on bass, and Maestro Peter Purich on fiddle perform "The Old Ark" hillbilly-style.

LINER NOTES ON “WILLING SPIRIT, WEAK FLESH”

The blues and Spirituals reflect life: love, sorrow, joy, pain, anger, despair, hope and death. This collection of songs represents the music that means the most to me: “WILLING SPIRIT, WEAK FLESH” is comprised of four blues, four original songs and four spirituals and is a kind of introduction to a planned four CD collection I’m working on that encompasses classic Blues (“the Fundamentalist”) classic spirituals and gospel songs (“Got Religion, Ain’t Ashamed” and “Afterlife”) and Original songs (“Pros Diakonos”) that will be recorded over the next year.

I have loved, studied and played the blues for over thirty five years and although it’s old, it never gets old. There is an honesty and clarity to the blues that strikes deep. The Spirituals are very much a part of the history of the blues and almost every prewar bluesman recorded many Spirituals and Gospel songs. In a humble and respectful way, I will try to maintain that tradition.

THE SONGS: (deacon George-vocals, six and twelve string acoustic, resonator and electric guitars and harmonicas)

1. IF I HAD MY WAY (Traditional)..... Shock and awe; That was my reaction the first time I heard Rev. Gary Davis play this old gospel song. I opted for a different approach to the music but the story of the mighty Samson stays the same.

2. NOTHIN’ BUT (deacon George ©2008 deaconGeorgemusic)..... The blues describe a man’s emotions so well. This original song builds on the phrase “the blues ain’t nothin’ but…”

3. CHAIRS IN HEAVEN (deacon George ©2008 deaconGeorgemusic)..... There’s lots of talk in the good book about standing, walking and running so I’m hoping there’s somewhere to sit in the afterlife.

4. FORTY FOUR (Roosevelt Sykes)..... This song was made famous by the amazing Howling Wolf, but was originally recorded by barrelhouse piano man Roosevelt Sykes. Great stuff.

5. SPECIAL RIDER (Skip James)..... The only song Skip James recorded in open G (spanish) tuning. Haunting.

6. MERMAYDES (Mississippi John Hurt)..... I love a good lyric. This one caught me by surprise the first time I heard it and it’s still a favorite of mine.

7. I WANT TO DIE EASY (Traditional)..... I fell in love with this Spiritual the first time I heard Josh White’s early 30’s version.

8. BROKE DOWN ENGINE (Blind Willie McTell)..... This song captures desperation really well. One of Blind Willie’s best.

9. BOOGIWUGGI (deacon George ©2008 deaconGeorgemusic)..... Tampa Red’s “Boogie Woogie Dance”inspired this instrumental. I used to call it "Master Wong’s Inscrutable Boogie Woogie Dance", but decided it could use a shorter title.

10. UP TO ME (deacon George ©2008 deaconGeorgemusic)..... Making a decision is usually a choice between doing what you want and what’s right. This is my personal view on the subject.

11. SWEET CHARIOT (Traditional)..... One of my favourite spirituals and a staple of my live shows. Also a good excuse to play my telecaster.

12. ONE KIND FAVOR (Blind Lemmon Jefferson)..... This old standard spooked me the first time I heard it at age seventeen and the effect has not diminished over the decades. All this talk about graves and death. ouch!

Hello from the Red Planet!
May fireworks light up your sky! Sometimes music bounces from inside your head to the next dimension and sometimes it's right in front of you. Just grab the magic and go for broke!
I've always prided myself on having a low IQ since I was made with cheap re-processed American parts and a third class robot brain. Did you ever hear a synthetic human spouting philosophy in his underwear?

HAPPY BELATED ACROSS THE UNIVERSE DAY!!!
From the ROBOTS FROM MARS

Music from Earth has been deliberately launched into space by humankind. Other than attaching a disc to a spacecraft or randomly broadcasting TV and radio signals, the Third Planet has never before attempted to share it’s musical culture with the Heavens.
A Beatles song has been beamed out into the galaxy. NASA broadcasted the song, "Across the Universe", through the transmitters of its deep space communications network on the 40th anniversary of the songs recording at London's Abbey Road studios. February 4th also commemorated the space agency's 50th anniversary. The music was converted into digital data and sent on a 431 light year-journey towards Polaris, the North Star. The broadcast began its galactic crossing at 7 p.m. EST/February 4th 2008. Martian Side note: It might take awhile for the flower children around Polaris to respond to this broadcast. They prefer space polkas and hate all forms of technology.
