DEAD VOWS,
two words giving four individuals a chance to collectively deal with their demons, their pains of modern life and their fear of death. This band is their effort, their search for meaning, inspiration and an honest and energetic expression.
"Bad blood", the band's debut fullength manifests determination and hunger, curiousity and urgency throughout all of the 11 songs. This pieace of plastic, paper and punk will see the light of day in late July through REFOUNDATION and FRILLY PINK! Beware!
Featuring members of THE SMACKDOWN, SEVEN FEET FOUR, ANCHOR, 8 DAYS OF NOTHING and REPOMAN to mention just a few out of very many. DEAD VOWS is a band to be reckoned with for a long time in the future! "I guess Dead Vows are from Sweden, I don't even remember getting this or how it ended up in my review pile. Honestly I thought I was putting in the Reign Supreme record to review and mistakenly posted in the general discussion section how different, and how much I liked, what I was listening too. It wasn't until I ejected the CD out of my computer that I realized it was an entirely different band (which is embarrassing since I had booked RS this summer).
I haven't been blown away by a record in a while, especially anything that falls in the realm of metal influenced hardcore. I've been listening to so much hardcore trying to catch up on reviews that I am getting sick of the genre and anything related to it. Well here is a bright spot in my musical week.
Dead Vows' record, Bad Blood, is extremely impressive. At points the band reminds me of what Black Widows could have been with a stronger front man or what Suicide File should have sounded like (not boring). Dead Vows take a sound that's been done, giving it an original twist and injected energy into a style that's been pretty bland.
Brutal hardcore, angry vocals and unstoppable energy. If the Refused and Acme had a bastard child that hated it's parents, you would have Dead Vows.

Dead Vows come from Göteborg, Sweden, home of many death metal bands that I won’t bother mentioning, because if it’s death metal, was recorded within the past fifteen years and is good, chances are it comes from Sweden. You might also know Sweden for punkier bands like the Hives and Millencolin, who although have had their moments, are one-trick ponies with a limited (in my opinion) ability to emulate American bands. Then you have bands like Wolfbrigade who fall somewhere in between, crafting a cross-over type of punk that takes into consideration the local death metal. Dead Vows are one such band, who draw heavily from early to mid 1980s USHC, before it started becoming a formulaic mess.
Bands like Black Flag, the Misfits and Minor Threat were all part of the same scene, which although today we take for granted, considering how varied the sound of those three bands is, must have appeared to be quite a random collection of sounds. On the one hand you have the ever-evolving trippy sound of Black Flag, on the other the theatricality and gothic aesthetic of the Misfits and in the middle the raw energy of Minor Threat. The mashing of these seemingly incompatible sound philosophies is exactly what Dead Vows have achieved on their record. To combine the essence of their primary inspirations and taking one step in a different direction. Songs like Off My Chest, Angelic Disguise and Dark Red Water demonstrate this ability of theirs with remarkable effect, which combine haunting, bass-heavy rock n’ roll parts with tortured vocals and spazzy guitar work. I would go so far as calling Dead Vows ‘Bizarro-Mötorhead’ in the nicest possible way.
Having seen them live over the summer on a DIY tour across Europe I was blown away by the raw energy that they put into their performance and how much they can elevate the songs above their (at times) drowsy vibe to epic proportions, that make me feel like I’ve just gone into Matrix-like Bullet Time and a demon has unleashed a sonic boom. I don’t know whether the production is at fault, but it definitely lacks in comparison to the live experience. The somewhat polished feel of the production detracts from the raw potential of the record and makes the end result feel a bit repetitive after five or six songs. I think that an EP comprised of some of these songs would be flawless. Nevertheless, their sound is pretty original, their live performance is intense and a welcome breath of fresh air in the underground European hardcore scene where trend-following can be just as prevalent as with other scenes. I look forward to listening and seeing more of them live.
