.."Solid...Your song has a good melody supported by interesting chords and a good hook. The judges appreciated the well done vocal performance. Well done."- Panel of Celebrity Judges from Mike Pinder (of the Moody Blues) Song Wars contest after having judged our original Tune "When the Night Comes"
...."I like to be careful with hype but no hype here. I've never heard anyone so soulful as you ..., the incongruity being your ages. Your sound is beyond your years. Beyond and a little bit so I can only imagine what it will become! Enjoyed your performance immensely tonight."- John Webster, DJ and radio personality from Rock 107's Daniels & Webster radio show
“Look out, music world, Dealer in Wares is ready to take Northeast Pennsylvania by storm. Led by the powerful vocals of Sarah Yzkanin . . . the Olyphant-based blues/rock band has already proved it can more than hold its own in a region filled with wanna-be rock stars. . . Their anthem, "The Dealer," is a hard-hitting blues/rock number with distinctive guitar riffs that also features harmonica playing by Ms. Yzkanin that could make Stevie Wonder jealous.” - Stacy Brown, Staff reporter for The Scranton Times
"Surely, this year's winner for Best Original Band comes as no surprise. Contemporary blues rock trio Dealer in Wares is so freaking likeable you'll be compelled to hang around after shows volunteering yourself as a roadie. The Olyphant act is plenty talented but its enthusiasm and genuine down-to-earth determination have given it an edge" - Alicia Grega - Staff Reporter, Electric City Weekly.
"Sultry, gritty, and downright heavy..." - Jess Meoni, Staff Writer for Unbound Culture Magazine
"There are people who can play instruments or music and then there are Musicians and you guys are definitely Musicians. I was blown away by [Sarah's] voice and I have to say that you guys are definitely in tune with each other and play as one." - Bill DeFazio, venue owner
"Yzkanin's moody, sensual delivery sounds with a wisdom well beyond her years...” - Alicia Grega Pikul, Staff Writer, Electric City Weekly
"With the powerful lyrics and often-haunting voice of lead singer Sarah Yzkanin, Dealer in Wares could be described as Janis Joplin singing a Fleetwood Mac-influenced song with Jimmy Page on guitar“- Randy Shemanski, Editor, Electric City Weekly
"The surprise of the day - no the shock of the day, was the opening band, Dealer in Wares. These people had such a tight sound, such a full sound, and such a laid back vibe on stage. I expect great things from them very, very soon." - Plain Sam radio personality and DJ - 99.5 FM after hearing them play at the Endless Mountain Blues Fest "Beautiful. That was by Dealer in Wares. They are the featured band tonight. They have been the last couple of weeks. They’re a breath of fresh air. They’re just obviously awesome performers...”- Paul Martin, DJ and solo artist, KCTV King's College Radio
"Did Dealer In Wares have to sell their souls on the Olyphant By-Pass to play so well at such a young age? It just wouldn’t be the blues if we knew for sure"- Rob Cee, Staff Writer for Electric City Renaissance
"The prolific band boasts haunting melodies, grinding guitars, restless energy and libertine longing impossible to ignore. Early acclaim has only made it more determined to earn the success authorities assure is certain." - Alicia Grega Pikul, Staff Writer, Electric City Weekly
"'The kids are alright' is an understatement when it comes to Dealer in Wares, a Blues/Rock trio out of Olyphant Pennsylvania. I was fortunate and very pleased to make their performance at Borders in Stroudsburg PA the evening of March 1st..." - Michael Meade: CEO, Editor-in-chief, journalist, photographer, Tastes Like Rock! Music Magazine
"You guys played soulfully from the heart. Thats a rare gift.”- Long Island Street Survivors, after opening for them and Artimus Pyle, famed Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer
"That last band was Dealer in Wares. Wow! They have alot of rave reviews - Daniels & Webster, Electric City Weekly, King’s College Radio - and I’ll tell you what, they’re worth every one of them because they’re a really good band."- Joe Craig, musician and host of NEPA Rebellion radio show
"Finally a female vocalist! Awesome and on pitch...Rock that harmonica!" - Manic Marc, DJ and Radio Personality from 98.5 FM KRZ after judging the Keystone College Battle of the Bands
"I love the bluesy feel ... Solid, soulful performance. Can't find a thing wrong or off..." - Judge from Keystone College Battle of the Bands
"Hey Janis, nice job...shocking soul, sweet harmonica, nice blend of sounds. I'm impressed. Sarah has a good stage presence." - Judge from Keystone College Battle of the Bands
"When The Night Comes" was written in its entirety by Sarah Yzkanin and copyrighted with the Library of Congress in 2008. Also, produced and recorded by Carl Canedy of The Rods in 2008.
VOTED BEST ORIGINAL BAND OF 2008 AS PART OF ELECTRIC CITY WEEKLY'S READER'S POLL
This page is dedicated to the band Dealer in Wares. The band was co-founded by vocalist, harpist and co-writer Sarah Yzkanin when she was just 16 years old. Musicians who performed with Dealer in Wares at various points include Tim Beckage (co-founder), Chris Price, Paul Martin, Sean Abbott, Royce Vaughn and Noah Spott, some as permanent members and song writers and some filling in when a member left the band. Sarah managed the band and was primarily responsible for its promotion and booking, recruited its members, and brought the project to award winning status in the two and a half year period Dealer in Wares was in existence. However, from its onset, the project was plagued by opposition and various negative outside influences on some of its members and it eventually started to deteriorate Sarah's resolve. They were never able to find and keep a solid line up of dedicated musicians who were willing to make the band a prioirity and protect it from the pull of people or situations in their personal lives. Despite their struggles, Dealer in Wares managed to win the hearts of music lovers in the Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Mt. Pocono area in the short time they were together. They performed weekly at a multitude of venues ranging from church picnics and coffee shops, to bars, theaters, shopping centers and blues fests. They appeared on local television, and received radio play from 102.3 FM - The Mountain, KCTV - King's College Radio, University of Scranton's Radio, IBIMW internet radio and were loved and supported by various DJs from 97.9X and Rock 107. Area experts in the industry agreed that the band was a force to be reckoned with.
In the spring of 2009, the remaining members began collaborating with a new producer and were offered an indie record deal. When Sarah pressed for a written contract, it was completely different from what had been represented to the band in the beginning. Contract negotiations started to fall through. Coupled with that, it became increasingly clear that band decisions and the music being made were slowly becoming more about what the producer and people close to him wanted rather than what the band itself had in mind. Faced with this realization, Sarah decided to terminate the relationship before contracts were signed. The fall out from that forced her to make a decision as to whether she wanted to continue the project at all. She decided to end Dealer in Wares in October of 2009, satisfied with her accomplishments and content to pursue other goals.
Read on for a summary of their accomplishments:
In September of 2007, their original tune, “Willow Song” placed number 14 in American Idol Underground’s top 50 rock songs. They made the same rock charts again when "Pretense", another original, placed number 43 the next month and number 48 in January of 2008.
In November of 2007, Dealer took second place in the Kiwanis Club Annual Talent Show and was awarded $500 for performing a third original tune, "This Dream." The band was awarded First Runner Up in the 2007 First Night Scranton Battle of the Bands.
A few days later, they opened for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer of the legendary Lynyrd Skynyrd, Artimus Pyle & The Long Island Street Survivors at the Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg. In April of 2008 they were awarded First Place in the Keystone College Commuter Council's Battle of the Bands. They were also voted NEPa Rebellion Internet Radio's No. 1 artist for the week of April 7, 2008.
In July of 2008, Dealer in Wares won the Electric City/Diamond City Weekly "Get Your Vote On" contest which allowed readers to vote for the band that would represent the 570 area at the Dewey Beach Music Conference in Delaware. They performed on the deck of the Rusty Rudder at the Music Conference as a result of that contest, in September of 2008.
In October of 2008 Sarah along with members Chris Price and Royce Vaughn were the featured article in the Scranton Sunday Times
In December of 2008 Dealer in Wares was awarded Best Original Band and Best Band Name of 2008 as part of the Electric City Weekly's Reader's Poll
In January of 2009 their newly released original tune "When The Night Comes" placed in the semi-final rounds of Mike Pinder's (of the Moody Blues) Song Wars Contest.
In March of 2009 the band was the cover story for the premere entertainment magazine in the area, "The Electric City."
In April, 2009 they opened for Rebbie Jackson , The Winstons, and three time winner of the Apollo Theater's Amateur night, Sheryl Felton as part of a tribute to Motown Records and Apollo Theater.
