About me: When I was in primary school and my teacher gave us a composition about any of our holidays abroad, I always use to write about my holidays abroad in Malta. The other kids could never wrap their heads around this. Today, whenever someone asks me where I’m from, I always use this analogy; I’m just like a cocktail. I’m made up of Maltese ingredients but I’m mixed, shaken and poured in Australia.
I was born in Sydney, Australia on the 13th October 1985 to two Maltese parents. I was the first of four boys (the youngest was the only one born in Malta). We came to Malta for good in 1994, a month before I turned nine and 2 days after I did my first Holy Communion. The reason being that my father, even though he loves Australia and still check the Sydney Morning Herald Newspaper online everyday, watches Australian cricket and earned three times more than he does here, he still missed his home, so we returned to his home town of Mellieha.
When in Malta I quickly picked up Maltese as I already understood a lot of it before we came here, especially the bad words. I went to Mellieha primary school, then to the wonderful Mikiel Anton Vassalli Junior Lyceum Tal-Hadaq. I’m still friends with some of my ex-teachers from Tal-Handaq and still have the same friends from back then, well, most of them anyway. Then to the Junior College and finally took a B.A. Degree in History of Art and Social Studies at the University of Malta and graduated last December.
Professionally I’ve had the typical Maltese student’s type of carrier, I mean in catering. Working mostly in summer and sometime on the weekends, my first job was as a pool boy, then as a waiter/barman in another hotel for 5 years. This helped me realize how strange tourists can be and it made me MUCH more considerate with people behind bars and counters, so I’m the type of guy that throws my garbage away when I’m at Burger King or MacDonald’s and never leave it on the table. I did other odd jobs like summer school and so on.
That’s who I am biographically and professionally, but as they say, you can’t judge a book by its cover (or DVD cover today). This is my attempt in trying to say “the job doesn’t describe the person whose doing it” in a funny and interesting way. One of my biggest and most passionate hobbies is drawing. I’ve been drawing stick figures since I was 2 and identifiable Superman since I was 3. I have an O-level and A-level in Art and have moved to digital colouring these days. Another crazy hobby of mine is making animated cartoons, the first one being when I was about 14 years old.
Another passion of mine is music, especially classic rock. My favourit bands are Guns n Roses and AC/DC. I use to try to defend and explain Rock music to the techno/RnB listening Maltese, but lately I’ve seen its futility and it doesn’t bother me anymore. From this passion, few months ago I also started to learn how to play the electric guitar. When I needed to, I did write (and still do sometimes) poems for girls, which now can be turned into lyrics so a band might be in my future, so watch out MTV.
Another hobby of mine is Movies and TV series. I had to put all my books off the book shelf and use it for DVDs, which I have over 400. I’m considered the movie Guru amongst my friends. The genre of movies that I enjoy the most is Comedy and action, why not? I see a movie to enjoy myself and not to cry, be scared or be intellectually stimulated. My favourit directors are Kevin Smith and James Cameron but I don’t really have a favourit actor and actress, I have several like, Bruce Willis, Adam Sandler, Seth Rogan, Will Smith, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Jack Black, Jessica Alba, ect…
So that’s me in a nutshell, they’ll probably not going to make a movie about me when I’m gone or if they are, they’ll leave this part out. I hope you learnt a little bit more about what makes me tick.
