“Improvement makes straight roads, but the crooked roads
without Improvement, are roads of Genius.”
— (William Blake, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell.)
Dean "Junior" Allen Foyd, quite possibly the most important blues guitarist of the second half of the 20th century, redefined blues. Foyd..s approach to music is so hugely different from anything that came before him that he ranks among the three greatest bluesmen of all: Son House, Bukka White, and Fred McDowell.
An originator, Dean Allen Foyd did more than build on certain tradition or perfect a certain style. Dean re-imagined the blues; he made a sound for himself.
He picked up the guitar at an early age. Constantly practising furiously, Dean slowly found himself at the mercy of an instrument that would get him into more mischief rather than alowing him to stay on a immaculate path. He discovered that this instrument spoke to him and occasionally ordered him to do things he quite could not explain...
For instance, on one incident when Dean Allen was six years old, and his sister was doing her usual bang-up job of babysitting, Dean took a gallon jug of corn off the high shelf. His mother found him in an alcohol-induced coma; she thought little "Junior" was dead.
Dean Allen Foyd..s father recognized the problem and knew the solution: his daughter needed a whipping and Junior belonged in the field. After two years of high school Dean was lured into Greenville by a job at the Dick Deere dealership. He grew tired of selling second hand cars and decided to try his luck over seas.
After 40 years of trying to touch the hearts of blues enthusiasts all over Europe he had come to the realisation that people had lost their sense of taste. He saw that music had become more of marketing plan rather than an artistic expression, an international laguage if you will where all types of people from different races and religions could join as one for the love of music. As it turns out,
Dean decided to take one last trip to Scandinavia. On his stay in Stockholm, he bumped into two young men who shared an equal love for the music where he had come from ( Old natural sweet mississippi blues) and made an agreement to do what was necesary to be able to spread the gospel of the devils music filtered through rich and exiting tripped out sounds proving to be the only way into getting people to understand his message of peace, love and understanding.
Long live electric fuzzed out guitars!!!
The first step into doing this was to take the former frontman of Roachpowder, putting him together with the bass player of Mother Superior. He added a drummer and a female backing vocalist experimenting with theramins blasting through a space echo, congas, allowing him to create the sublimital sounds of "Dean Allen Foyd and the Gimmicks".
The band has emerged from the decadent scene in Stockholm, Sweden. their
Influence by a colorful spectrum of different artists such as Captain Beefheart & his magic band, Hendrix, Hawkwind and many more space voyagers. With a blend of Dean..s "DELTA" magic, they have set out to combine old rythm and blues, soul, jazz with psychedelic sounds that will twist inside the mind of the listener. Now Dean Allen Foyd has retired to a unknown destination where from time to time he will send his Gimmick..s finished music, allowing them full freedom to enterpret his songs in their best efforts...
So, sit back, relax and float down a stream
of cosmic blues sent to you by his majesty of the delta mudd...
