"Last Thursday, I was really busy getting ready for the Treetop Poetry Regional Slam in Flagstaff and I took a breather to watch a couple of wonderful live musical acts.
I have seen Dean before in his band, Buddha With A Gun, but I had not seen him perform his acoustic set. I ventured to Rendevous on Aspen and this is what I saw:
The set was a fantastic mix of original tunes and guitar licks that made me feel the way I felt when I first saw Frank Black play. Dean is a character, no one else is like him, and I'm very thankful to have him as a crucial part of the Flagstaff art and music scene. At times, his voice reminded me of the lead singer from the Toadies, and other times his off-beat humor was reminiscent of King Missile. If you even know any of the bands I just name dropped, then Dean Bonzani is for you."
I was born in downtown Chicago, Illinois and moved out west at the age of 10. When I was 15, I got my first guitar and immediately started writing songs. I've been playing music professionally in Flagstaff, Arizona since 1985, either solo acoustic or with a variety of rock bands. My current band is Buddha Witha Gun. I've shared stages with Ben Harper, Buckethead, members of Oingo Boingo, All, Big Drill Car, Major Lingo, oh my god, Dead Hot Workshop and more.
As a freelance writer, I wrote music, art and cover articles for local arts and entertainment weekly, Flagstaff Live for ten years (and for every editor that the paper has seen, including its current one), before taking a two year break. My weekly column, "Zounds!" appeared on the lead page for more than a year before I left the paper to pursue other writing projects.
I'm currently at work on a collection of short stories based primarily in Flagstaff, Arizona, and again freelancing music features to pay for my ongoing HAND WIRED, HAND BUILT, ALL-TUBE GUITAR AMP project (and the odd bottle of single malt scotch.) Look for my music features in Flagstaff Live and contact me if you have a newsworthy musical event or story.
This Saturday night we are throwing a Halloween Party at the Orpheum with Yin Yang and Zen Some. Sedona superfreaks Yin Yang and Zen Some know how to throw a party. Its actually impossible to convince them not to dress up in costumes during the 364 days of the year that are not Halloween. That's why we thought that they would be a particularly appropriate band to play Halloween. YYZS plays a an eclectic mix of music, focusing on 80s songs that don't suck (think New Wave, Talking Heads, etc...). So put on your freakiest outfit and come down to the Orpheum to dance. Bwahahahahaha!
