DeAnne's Comedian Bio
|
| Bio | DeAnne Smith, a New York native, knew she wanted to be comedian at age 11 as she watched Live at the Improv in the living room with her dad. She exploded onto Montreal's comedy scene in 2005, after just 16 short years of repressing her dream, which included stints spent as a creative writing student, a research assistant, an editor, an English teacher, a street outreach counselor, a nanny, a dishwasher and a grocery store cashier.
Today, there's hardly a nook or cranny of the city DeAnne hasn't performed in. In addition to co-creating the weekly, alternative comedy series, Comedy Off the Main, DeAnne runs the monthly story-telling series Tale Spin!, as well as the highly successful bi-monthly burlesque comedy show, Stand Up / Strip Down. DeAnne was voted one of Montreal's top five comedians by readers of The Montreal Mirror for three years in a row, and was named a Noisemaker by the publication in 2009. She's appeared on NBC's Last Comic Standing and was featured in the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in 2007, whose website predicted, "You can expect this alternative comic to make some noise and garner a great deal of attention." Confident that her quirky and cerebral brand of humor was well-received at home, DeAnne travelled to Australia in early 2008 to perform her hour-long solo show, "Shouting Over Drunks." After charming crowds at the Adelaide Fringe Festival in February, DeAnne was invited to perform in Sydney's Cracker Comedy Festival in April, where she picked up an award for Best Newcomer. DeAnne was also nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Newcomer upon her return to Montreal and taped a set for a special for The Comedy Network, which aired in March 2009. DeAnne returned to Australia in 2009 to perform her second solo show "DeAnne Smith Lacks Focus," to sell-out crowds at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Sydney Comedy Festival. Most recently, DeAnne picked up a nomination for "Best Established Comedian" at the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2009, was invited to tour with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival to Western Australia and Southern Australia and was invited to represent Montreal in the 2009 Homegrown Competition at Just for Laughs. Phew!
Incidentally, DeAnne comes from an alcoholic family and sometimes wonders if this is the real reason she's chosen a career in which she competes for attention in a room full of people with drinks in their hands. In writing bios, she's never sure if she should aim to be funny, informational, self-aggrandizing, or all of the above. Soon, she'll probably quit with the self-affirming list of credits and accolades, and just accept that she is, really, like a real comedian and everything.
P.S. DeAnne Smith is a powerhouse of hilarity! Please love her! Thank you for reading! | | Website | deannesmith.com | | Influences | Alcoholic parents and righteous feminist anger mixed with a desperate need for acceptance. Oh, and a love of laughter. Mostly the love of laughter. | | TV Shows | Last Comic Standing. I was on some Comedy Network thing in Canada in March (haven't seen it yet). Australians may have seen me on Good News Week or the sports-quiz show, The Squiz (cringe). Oh, and I played the role of "Genius Bonkers" on the show "Weird People," taped by my 10-year-old nephew in his basement in Philadelphia. |
