These are things slash people we love... you may or may not hear their influence:
Brent Knopf, Menomena, Joni Mitchell, Laura Veirs, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, Imogen Heap, The Dodos, The Beach Boys, Cat Stevens, Simon and Garfunkle, Kimya Dawson, Ben Folds, Modest Mouse, Andrew Bird, Regina Spektor, Marching Band, Mew, The Dears, Fionn Regan, The Shins, Bob Dylan, Mutemath...
Sounds Like:
... when you feel so much that you think you might explode and then laugh at yourself for being such a melodramatic douchebag!
welcome to our home on myspace. thanks for visiting.
some years ago darryl (producer and sound engineer and guy who is generally well-versed in all things musical) witnessed the extraordinarily excruciating process of me spilling my guts on a little stage at an acoustic evening. i was so shy that i couldn't open my eyes. not even one. i still feel like that sometimes.
so really, it's all darryl's fault. he advised and encouraged me. he convinced me to drop out of university, where i was studying languages and politics. we recorded together in his demo studio, and we released our first album under the name 'harris tweed'.
then we began to traipse around south africa playing our hearts out and learning the crazy ways of the traveling troubedour. were lucky enough to be invited to showcase at the south by southwest festival in austin, texas. there we saw things that blew our minds wide open. we heard sounds we had never conceived, and returned with fire in our bellies; inspiration to become more and more free. and more and more ourselves.
we knew we needed someone to shake things up a little. i sent a message to one of our favourite bands: menomena. via myspace. (this very one) and they replied. brent knopf flew out to south africa to produce our new album. the time we spent recording these songs was the best three weeks of my life so far.
it's called 'replace why with funny' (try it. it's good for you.) and it's out now in south africa and germany and austria and switzerland. in april/may it will come out in the rest of europe. and hopefully one day it'll be available everywhere else where there are humans with lumpy blood-pumpers in their chests and ears on the sides of their heads.
oh... if you'd like to listen to our album for free click HERE
i also need to tell you about michael. he's our new friend. and he plays the drums proper good. (even if he does like metal!) and we have an even newer new friend waiting in the wings as well. (she will reveal her marvelous self post-haste, and you will love her like we do.) who knows how many friends may join us on the stage in the months and years to come. it's a good thought.
but i think that's all for now.
over and out!
