Don’t let the name dissuade you from lending them your ear” Writes Colorado Music Buzz’s Charlie Sullivan. “A tight untarnished resonance…their live shows are energetic and the songs carefully crafted…Keep a watchful eye on these boys.”
But since the release of their debut EP “Raleigh St.”, this Denver rock quintet is climbing the local and regional ranks so quickly they’ve become difficult to keep an eye on.
The band started in early 2008 as a collaborative side project for guitarists Samuel Pritchett and Nasir Malik. Over the span of a few months, though other members phased in and out, former members of Denver group Color Reporter, Violinist/Guitarsit Joshua Lee and the Berryman brothers Brad(bass) and Wily(drums) became the final three permanent members. Wily left the band shortly after finishing Raleigh St, and the band has since worked with two other drummers, former 6afraidof7 drummer Matt Massotti, and most recently Mathew Starr of Glass Delirium.
Since it’s formation, Death Hickey Blues has been plagued by an identity crisis. Flirting with and borrowing from a wide spectrum of musical genres, the group’s sound has evolved significantly over time. The result, such as it is, is a radio friendly, vocally driven and sonically dynamic blend of alternative-rock, pop and Americana. Boasting four talented, expressive vocalists and a violin to accompany the alternately melodious and powerful guitars, the songs, both live and on record, are unique and engaging. There is some music that comforts you when you’re sad, that makes you want to dance or pumps you up, that reminds you of good friends or of hard times. Death Hickey Blues paints a picture of the beautiful things we see, dream and feel in our lives, whether pain, sorrow and hardship, or passion, joy and satisfaction.
Currently, the group is putting together it’s first full-length album, which can be expected in the spring of 2010. Both the single “The Rain is Gone” and the “Raleigh St.” EP are available on itunes, as well as all other major online distributors.
