Singer, song-writer, keyboardist Debbie Johnson was born in Trinidad into a musically gifted family. Together with her parents and brothers and sister, they performed around Trinidad as The Johnson Family. Appearing on stage at festivals and such, young Debbie got a chance to polish her natural talents and become comfortable on stage at a very early age. Emigrating to Toronto in the early ‘70’s, Debbie Johnson moved on to another family group, this one an R&B act called “Sweet Ecstasy”. It was made up of her brothers Eddie and Rick, and her sister, Joanne.
Soon to be a Canadian singing star, Debbie Johnson eventually went solo and drew plenty of attention in the Toronto scene during the late '80s and into the '90s. Teaming up with Stampeder singer/song-writer/producer Rich Dodson, she began a 5 year recording relationship with Marigold Records. During that time she recorded several hit songs including “Mama Said Why”, “Mega Love”, “Just Like Magic”, “Lonely Lovers”, “Best Friend”, “Secret Love”, “I’ll Respect You” and “Power To The People”. These songs earned a number of Juno nominations including Best R&B Artist and Most Promising Female Vocalist. Her albums include ‘Just Like Magic’, ‘Touch The Sky’, ‘So Excited’ and ‘The Dance Mix’. This ‘Best Of Debbie Johnson” release includes two great new unreleased bonus tracks – “Round Midnight” and “Jazz Me”.
Debbie Johnson currently resides in Toronto and continues to write songs and perform and hang out with her talented daughter, Ashley.
