Sounds Like
I get a lot of "you sound like Tracy Chapman" comments at shows...and some Janis Joplin, Melissa Etheridge, Stevie Nicks, Ann Wilson from Heart, Sheryl Crow, Linda Rondstadt, Joan Armatrading, Etta James, Koko Taylor and even some Robert Plant comparisons too...mostly when I'm covering those artist....but I think I sound like me no matter what I sing!
So, my dad was a singer/guitarist, my mom played in the school band, and I was grew up in the bar my family owned from the time I was the craddle, up to the age of 8 or 9...I guess? My dad would let me play with his band, on my first intrument...the kazoo! LOL! I guess that's how I developed an ear for music, from humming in key while kazoo'ing! A few years later, I was in a bad, life-changing, accident at the age of 11, that left me scarred for life, nearly crippled, and happy to still have two legs. While recouperating from having 2 chest-to-toe length body casts, and re-learning how to stand, then walk again, I was home-schooled for my entire 8th grade year! Once I was in a single-leg cast up to the hip, and finally somewhat mobile for the first time in months, I found one of my sister's song books for guitar and figured that might help pass the time! So, I would hobble around on my crutches and sneak my dad's guitar to my room, and I taught myself to play guitar with that song book! So now, many years, and countless gigs later, I can hardly walk again sometimes, and I may need a new knee soon, but I can still make music! Someone asked me how bad my leg hurts...I said define hurt...once you've had to have your leg RE-BROKEN by doctors without any drugs for the pain, a messed-up knee is just a little nuisance! ANYWAY! What it comes down to basically, is this, I love playing music and singing! It's all I know! For more info...just ask me...and I just might share a little more!
