'Stalkers! Wherever this girl sings she picks up a stalker! Seriously! In all shapes and sizes, the Deborah Shaw stalkers are won over at each performance by her heartfelt, to -the- bone lyrics, unique voice and her ability to push the boundaries of conventional singing technique. Like Jewel and Tori Amos before her, Deb comes from the Bjork school of vocal style. A bit mix-and-match, a bit here-and there, she keeps the audience guessing how each phrase will sound. Sometimes high and smooth, sometimes low and husky, in the words of Cole Porter, ‘Anything Goes’.
Lyrically too, Deborah defies the mainstream fare of predictable rhymes and predictable content, instead opting for little girls swimming in sewers in South America. Seriously. And let me tell you, its damn effective!
With a background in Jazz, Deb’s piano scoring is sensual and seductive, or chordal and simple. You will find her singing solo at the piano, or fronting a whole band.
