From playing in the Sahara Desert, with Roswell Rudd, to creating music in a grain silo, to touring the world with Frank Sinatra; trombonist/composer Deborah Weisz’s life in music has been filled with diversity.
Originally from Chicago, IL, Deborah’s musical journey has included stops in Phoenix, Las Vegas, and NYC, where she has lived since 1993; performing a variety of music work while exploring the post-bop and beyond realms with her own ensembles.
Her debut CD, with her quintet, Breaking Up, Breaking Out, had critics writing...
"that rare debut that goes beyond showing promise to actually delivering the musical goods" (Cadence - David DuPont),
"a debut to cheer," (JazzTimes - Chuck Berg), and the legendary jazz saxophonist
Jimmy Heath wrote... “This is Post Bop Modernism at its best.”
Regarding her quintet's second CD, Grace, released September 2005, critics wrote...
“Beginning with its reverent yet fun loving title cut, Grace (for Will), the new CD from trombonist Deborah Weisz’ eclectic quintet, is a delight...delivering a varied program of creative music that swings, bops and stretches boundaries in intriguing ways.”
(AllAboutJazz - Elliot Simon) “Compositionally, Weisz owns up to her main influence: the pianist Jim McNeely...she also reaches for a groovy light avant-gardism subtly informed by Ornette Coleman and the AACM.”(JazzTimes - Nate Chinen)
and jazz pianist/composer Jim McNeely wrote, “Deborah Weisz has developed a personal voice as both trombonist and composer/arranger... she makes a powerful statement on the potential of modern small-group jazz."
With the release of her new Trio CD, TRIO (June 12th, 2007), new compositions in the works for other artists, and her own ensembles, Deborah continues her diverse life in music, communicating her own personal vision along the way. News update! New TRIO CD review - November 9th, 2007
You can read a wonderful review by David Dupont in Cadence Magazine's Oct. Nov. Dec. 2007 issue
Here is a short excerpt, that you will also find posted at my website:
“Her newest Trio like her previous releases shows her as much concerned with fashioning a coherent ensemble performance as with showing off her own estimable instrumental capabilities...The trio delivers...with a collective looseness that never sounds drilled, but rather like they are spontaneously spinning out the notes. Weisz’ distinctive tone serves as the lodestar for the band. She speaks through her horn with a dramatic whisper, akin to Lauren Bacall’s voice.“
New TRIO CD Review posted Dec. 7th, 2007 at AllAboutJazz.com by Larry Taylor.
Here is a short excerpt, also posted at my website with a link to the full review...
“This loosely swinging session features standards, mixed with several originals from Weisz and Bailey. The fact that the group has played regularly at The Garage in New York City’s Greenwich Village is always apparent in their cohesive arrangements. With Weisz’s lush, warm sound leading, all have ample solo time...”
New TRIO CD Review posted February in AllAboutJazz/NY (pg. 19) by Laurel Gross.
Here is a short excerpt, also posted at my website with a link to the full review...
"Trio is a highly engaging and likeable foray into mostly straightahead territory; yes, served straight up but with a twist.
...interesting and reflective music..."

Hello Deborah, thanks a lot for adding my name to your list. It's nice of you to share your music with all of us, great sound. I wish you all the best. Greetings from Barcelona.
Hi Debbie, It is pleasure to finally get to meet you. Well… I guess "meet you" probably isn't the correct terminology to use, after all, this is just MySpace. But I have been an admirer of your trombone playing for quite some time now and it is nice to have some sort of way to let you know. Thanks for being a MySpace friend of mine. Jim
Blessings Deborah Weisz, hope you are enjoying your summer! Please swing by my page and check out the new songs, read some enlightening blogs (Melba Liston, Santa Davis, Victor Provost, Inner Visions, Onaje Murray...) and refresh your busy self! Give thanks, one love! Always, Oboelady Anna Fisher
