I've been writing and publishing mystery novels, short stories, personal essays, and articles for almost thirty years. I guess the most well-known publication I've been published in is Chicken Soup for the Bride's Soul.
Both books in my Alex Bellamy series, TAXED TO DEATH and FATAL ENCRYPTION, centre around white-collar crime in Vancouver, BC--home of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Scenes also take place in the beautiful suburbs of Port Moody, Coquitlam, Burnaby, and New Westminster; areas that I don't think anyone's ever written about.
I have a diploma in criminology and volunteered in prisons and a youth detention centre. I've also worked at a variety of clerical jobs over the years, raised a family, then returned to work in retail for a while. Right now, I'm spending most of my time writing until the next interesting job comes along. I live with my husband, our two kids, and a menagerie of pets, including our black lab named Baily.

Here's a quick overview of FATAL ENCRYPTION:
Dressed as Kermit the Frog on Halloween night, an unemployed Alex Bellamy wonders where his life went wrong. It could be worse. A few miles away, Zachary Ternoway is stabbed at his front door. In need of cash, Alex agrees to help catch a computer prankster at McKinleys’ Department Store. But things turn serious when someone vows to permanently encrypt the store’s data and torch the building unless ten million dollars is handed over in two weeks. Alex knows there’s a connection between the murder and the extortion threat, yet time’s running out. People are questioning his competency, and a killer’s threatening his life.
FATAL ENCRYPTION is a corporate caper with plenty of twists and turns, and an assortment of appealing characters to keep you guessing. Debra Purdy Kong’s newest novel offers a well-plotted mystery reminiscent of the classic whodunits. A great beach read!” – Cheryl Kaye Tardif, bestselling author
HERE ARE THE LATEST REVIEWS OF FATAL ENCRYPTION!
"...it is a well-plotted mystery full of unexpected events, power plays, affairs and family problems. Furthermore, action is present throughout the book so the reader doesn't get bored; not even for a moment. What really stimulates the reader's interest is that nearly all of the characters are plausible suspects. S/he never stops guessing but cannot identify the culprit and this makes its a riveting, exciting, and certaining book till its very end." - Maria Gouna at http://mariasbookreviews.blogspot.com
"...I recently stumbled upon Debra Purdy Kong and am so glad I did. She is a breath of fresh air. FATAL ENCRYPTION made me remember why mystery novels will always hold a dear place in my heart. This book had all the makings of the classic puzzle solving story but for the twenty-first century." - Cheryl Koch
Debra Purdy Kong is a talented writer with a gift for creating detailed plots and settings. Her main character, Alex Bellamy, jumps off the page as a real character. He is someone the reader identifies with and easily roots for. FATAL ENCRYPTION is a very good mystery that will keep you guessing the whole way..." - Rai Aren Author of Secret of the Sands
"FATAL ENCRYPTION is an entertaining mystery full of back room corporate deals, family squabbles and power plays, secret affairs, and murder. I enjoyed this novel. Kong creates multiple plausible suspects throughout the story leaving the reader guessing all the way until the end . . . Reminiscent of 'Murder She Wrote', FATAL ENCRYPTION features an everyday guy with good observational and deductive skills who solves a crime. Kong has created an interesting character and I look forward to the next Alex Bellamy mystery." - Todd A. Fonseca, author of The Time Cavern
"FATAL ENCRYPTION starts off comically with Alex Bellamy on his way to a party dressed as Kermit the Frog. The pseudo-scary special effects of Halloween become real when a party guest returns home and finds her front door blocked. She manages to get the door open far enough to see her brother-in-law crumpled on the floor, oozing blood, with a steak knife nearby.
Kong keeps the story moving with lots of action and an effective "ticking clock" created by the hacker's deadline. There are a lot of characters in the story but she has given each of them a distinct personality so it's not hard to keep them straight. While I'm not a computer expert, the technical parts of the plot seemed plausible and very relevant in today's world. I would recommend FATAL ENCRYPTION, especially to anyone interested in the irony of how we are made vulnerable by the technology upon which we have become dependent." - Sandra Carey Cody, author of Consider the Lilly
"FATAL ENCRYPTION opens with a murder and non-stop action, which kept me glued to the edge of my seat for the whole ride! I read right through 159 pages before I convinced myself to put the book down and go to bed.
I love that this author has figured out that a thrilling opening chapter is important in this kind of storyline. I hate reading thrillers that don't get to where they need to be until the end of the book!!! No worries here.
Alex is a flawed character, and I loved him. Its a nice change of pace to have a main character who is ordinary, one that is not written as some sort of superhero who comes in at the eleventh hour to save the day by simply putting two and two together and getting this impossible solution.
I also loved the pace of this book, it's non-stop action from beginning to end, and I can honestly say that there is not one wasted moment. About one quarter through the book, I thought I had it figured out, and I was completely wrong! Although the suspense was killing me, I had no desire to jump ahead and was happily zipping through page after page." - www.RebeccasReads.com
"Held hostage for ten million dollars - only Alex Bellamy can save the company from giving into the demands and going bankrupt. "FATAL ENCRYPTION" is the story of a sudden murder and its strange linke to the McKinley's Department Store in which Alex agreed to assist, believing that the murder and the ransom plot against the store's computer information are conected somehow. He must find the connection, the killer, and the extortionist or face unemployment, among other unpleasantness. A riveting mystery, FATAL ENCRYPTION is highly recommended for community library mystery collections." - Midwest Review
"This is the second in Purdy Kong's Alex Bellamy mystery series. I always enjoy a well crafted, well written mystery novel and FATAL ENCRYPTION is one of them. Not only does it have a gripping plot and three dimensional characters, there is a well-woven subtext throughout. See if you can figure that out while you try to identify the killer. This is the type of book that makes you long for the next in the series as you approach the end--a page turner with more depth than most." - Julie Ferguson
"Debra Purdy Kong writes with a flair for technology. FATAL ENCRYPTION has a timely plot. The thought of Alex in a frog costume brings humor and depth to his character. This is an entertaining read. Mystery readers will love it." Debra Gaynor, ReviewYourBook.com
