A valued member of the Canadian music scene and an integral part of the international Celtic world, Declan O’Doherty has been producing some of Canada’s finest artists since he arrived from Ireland in 1979. Declan’s combination of experience, skill, unflagging commitment and humour inspires confidence and generates award-winning sound recordings. His attention to and flexibility around the artistic and financial elements of a project ensures consistent quality and forward momentum. His style as a producer is inclusive, considerate and genuine. His approach is sensitive to the creative individuality of each venture. He believes strongly in open communication and clear project management. From his introduction to the Irish music industry in the early 70’s, Declan has been developing his talents and acquiring new skills. He has worked across many genres, engineering, arranging and/or producing such talents as Paul McCartney & Wings, Cat Stevens, Gerry Rafferty, Rush, Rita MacNeil, Gordie Sampson, The Barra MacNeils and Quartette. He has twice been nominated for a Juno Award for best producer and is on the advisory board of the Songwiters Assocation of Canada.
Recently, Declan has expanded into the world of television and, with a number of successful projects to his credit is in demand as a music director. Recent shows have featured The Barra MacNeils, Maggie MacInnes, Rita MacNeil, Ashley MacIsaac, Mavis Staples, Jimmy Rankin and members of New Brunswick’s Ode A L’Acadie. He plays piano and button accordion with Toronto Celtic band Spraoi (http://www.spraoi.ca) whose sold-out shows are receiving rave reviews. He is also much in demand for studio and live work.
Declan is proud to have been associated with Celtic Colours International Festival in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia since its inception in 1997. He has been an integral member of the team that has established this festival as one of the most successful events in the international Celtic music calendar. The extensive list of artists he has worked with over the years includes: Altan, Cherish The Ladies, The Chieftains, Phil Cunningham, Danu, Flook, Dougie Maclean, Natalie MacMaster, Lunasa, Carlos Nunez, Tim O’Brien, Sharon Shannon, Shooglenifty, Katherine Tickell, Bela Fleck, The Unusual Suspects and many more. You will find him organizing and stage-managing many of the larger shows there again in October.
