What would you call music that starts from the spaced out aesthetics of dub, blends in soul with distorted guitars and is infused with experimental futuristic elements... Distorted Futuristic Soul? Perhaps. It’s the closest you’ll get to capturing Dee Day Dub’s style. It is music that transgresses genres and boundaries in search of a new style of musical expression that meshes the jam with song form.
Sharpening its teeth as the resident band at the legendary Bazillus Club in Zurich, Dee Day Dub has been described as a bridge between the free-spirited groove musics of the 1970s (The Headhunters, Band of Gypsies), the trippy distorted soundscapes of artists like Massive Attack or Living Colour, and the gritty urban calls from the future (N.E.R.D., Jamie Lidell).
Dee Day Sessions @ Bazillus Club
Dee Day Dub's homebase and research laboratory is the Bazillus Club in Zurich, home to a vibrant underground groove music scene (www.myspace.com/bazillusclub). The Bazillus has not only served as an experimental field for jazz legends such as Art Blakey, Billy Cobham, Dexter Gordon, Don Cherry, Eddie Harris, Elvin Jones, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, John Abercrombie, John Scofield, Sun Ra and Tony Williams in the past; it has also nurtured the future with state-of-the art resident bands such as Nik Bärtsch's Ronin, Jean-Paul Bourelly's Motion or Vault.
«Deterministic Chaos» was what drummer Singha Dee had in mind when he started a series of live instant-composing sessions at Bazillus Club in 2006, inviting a total of 33 musicians from different fields of music to sit in. He called the event «Dee Day», in a playful reference to the day of deliverance. The aim of the sessions was to create song-oriented music right in front of a paying audience while the recording tape was running. To maximise musical tension, Dee brought in different musicians each session, most of whom met on stage for the first time. The only constant for musical cohesion was the instrumentation: vocals, keys, guitar, bass, drums and dub effects (delay, spring reverb). The idea was to «write» in the moment, free of restrictions and formulas and to let things develop from their seemingly random initial condition to something more determined... the results of these experiments will be released on the album «Chaos Theory».
Album «Chaos Theory»
The upcoming album «Chaos Theory» reflects the interactive spirit of the Dee Day Sessions in all its facets. Singha Dee recorded 35 hours of material that he took back to his studio and cut down to songs. He boiled down the sessions to what sounds like a “proper” album, but essentially consists of anarchic jam sessions, instant composing fragments, cover versions of improvisational parts, snippets from rehearsal breaks, and some overdubs where required to complete the picture of the song. «Chaos Theory» is a colourful patchwork of raw song pearls, musical snapshots, sonic mirages, muddy grooves and other curiosities, all of which came to life at the spur of a moment.
Dee Day Dub - Live!
Dee Day Dub today work & tour as a five piece core unit. However, the 3D Work in Progress Sound Lab held on each 1st Monday of the month at Bazillus Club still serves as a creative collaborative platform for Dee Day Dub to interact and perform with affiliated sonic and visual artists.
