Influences
Just about everything I've ever heard is an influence. And I'm still listening. This includes Blues from the beginning of the recording industry to date, Rock of all forms, from easy listening to Metal, R&B, Soul, Funk, Broadway Musicals, even classical. I listen. I hear. I remember. And all of it comes out in my music.
Life itself is also a major influence. Pain, sadness, loss - yes, all of those. But also joy, love and a sense of fulfillment. There's just no other music that allows you to tap into your deepest heart... to feel the pain and release it, to feel the love and shout it out loud.
The people who share my life are another important influence. And I appreciate every one of you.

Deeper Blues is Blues that sounds like nothing you've heard before. Bassist/vocalist Lane Baldwin has combined the best of traditional Blues with a vast array of musical influences gained in almost fifty years of playing. Working with some of the finest musicians in the country, Lane has created a sound like no other. You've got to see it to believe it.
What makes Deeper Blues different? Deeper meaning in the songs. Deeper emotion in the delivery. This is Blues the way it was mean to be felt. Darn right it hurts, and it's made more than one man cry. But, oh, the redemption...
Lane began his musical training at age five, studying piano from the same teacher who prepared his mother for the Julliard auditions (which she passed, by the way). He fell in love with the bass the very first time he picked one up, and knew he was born to play low.
Lane's first professional gig came at the tender age of 13. A short stint in the Navy kept him from pursuing his love full-time until 1982. Shortly thereafter, he was initiated into the DC Blues scene, performing and recording with a Who's Who of East Coast talent, including Daryl Davis (Legendary Blues Band), guitar heroes Linwood Taylor and James Mabry, Mike Melchione (Buckwheat Zydeco), Mark Stutso (Jimmy Thackery), Cesar Diaz (Bob Dylan) and many more. Later in his career, he plied his trade in other parts of the country, working with such notables as Mason Ruffner, Jules Alexander (The Association), Bruce Hayes, and Paul Bushbacher (L'il Ed & the Imperials).
In addition to hundreds of recording and touring credits, Lane is a Musical Ambassador for the District of Columbia. His articles on the "state of the bass" have been published world wide.
For decades, Lane has had the pleasure to work with, and learn from, the prior generation. "One thing that came back around time and time again," Lane says, "is that Blues began as a means of not only releasing one's pain, but sharing that experience with others. The benefits of this are enormous, both to the individuals and to the community. Our goal is to bring that back to the Blues, to once again take them Deeper, to the very center of your heart and soul."
Growing up when he did, it's only natural the Lane is well indoctrinated in Rock of many stripes. And, yes, these influences shine through. But, "this is Blues, y'all," says Lane, "even when it isn't. Every song we do, no matter how hard the edge, is a Blues song at heart. Now, you could say that about a lot of Rock music. One big difference is that we know it – really know it. And we do our best to honor the tradition, and those who have gone before."
The band cuts a long orbit through a myriad of styles: a bare-bones presentation of Lane's lament Underground, nothing but Lane and his acoustic bass guitar; Hound Dog, a nod of respect to John Lee Hooker; the Texas grit of Coupe de Ville and the Chicago strut that underpins the band's shuffles; an undeniable heaviness to match the gravity of Gravedigger Jones. And above all, the gut wrenching, heartbreaking pain and sorrow of the band's slow Blues, an overwhelming display of emotion that has - far more than once - made a grown man cry and brought audiences to their feet.
With the 2008 release of Dig the Hole, Deeper Blues rapidly gained international attention, selling CDs on every continent (except Antarctica). The band is currently negotiating a European tour for early 2010.
As the band begins 2009, Lane looks forward to the release of a live CD, and an expansion of the band's roadwork to include Europe and possibly Asia. Join Deeper Blues on its journey through the pain and sorrow, the release and redemption that are the Blues. Hi from Indianola, MS, home of BB King and the new $16M BB King Blues Museum! BB King Homecoming is Friday, June 5th and it's going to be a very special one. BB has recently purchased the famous Club Ebony (where Keb Mo' showed up for the Sunday Evening Jam last week!) and will be playing there after his Concert in the Park. It is incredible to see the King of the Blues work at such close range.
