Jason Williams (aka Deepkiss 720) is one of UK noise music’s best-kept secrets. Details are sketchy but his ‘bio’ goes something like this. By his own admission, he tries not to release much, “but things happen”. A shadowy figure on the UK noise scene DK720 started out after recording a Radio1 'Peel Session’ with I'm Being Good in early 90s Brighton. He’d also been also exploring less popular areas of art, noise and tape label culture with the "Prick Decay clan", eventually inspiring Dylan Nyoukis to move his Chocolate Monk operation to Brighton. DK720 gigs started at around that time pushing the boundaries of showmanship and drunkenness. Venues were damaged, blood spilled (mostly his own) as Jase tried to create an atmosphere of complete chaos and aural terror in pubs, clubs and art galleries, his questioning in UK glossy trash magazine Bizarre probably sums up his "rock n roll" attitude at this time, "...during the performance I cut my head and ear, but you know it's been a good gig when you wake up the next day and your head's stuck to the pillow with blood." I guess the highlight of this first phase of his career was playing in Prick Decay at the Barrowlands, Glasgow - supporting Sonic Youth.
Deepkiss720 was then put out of action with Cancer for a couple of years. During this "down time" Jason released the first vinyl for EVIL MOISTURE in the form of the scum:fi classic album GAK. His label ‘Quick Latin Handful’ also released some very meagerly distributed material by Braincel, Wagstaff, Planet Size Clit etc. (try MUTANT SOUNDS blog?)
He and Dylan Nyoukis in prankster mode then penned the fictional (ISOFC) 'Dipsomaniac Theory & Cancer Chew' article for Bananafish issue 12.
The rejuvenated phase two DK720 went on to produce recordings of magic mushroom psychosis for his sold-out in a flash 'Pace X Friction' picture disc LP for Harbinger Sound. A typically eclectic and terminally unclassifiable opus featuring genre-bending plunderphonics, lo:tech glitch, pre-lap top cut ups and general sonic mayhem.
DK720 was asked to supply a "shit sound" for screenings by experimental film maker Jeff Keen. This proved to be the first of many enjoyable collaborations where Jason has tried to marry his electronics with other disciplines. The most satisfying include a jazz blast with saxophonist Geoff Hearn. Soprano opera singer Madame Veila's deafening duet which pushed the levels of distortion on Jessica Rylan and Josh Hydeman’s “Thrasher/Princess” cassette even further into the red. Shamefully we weren’t there, but we understand that most gallery-goers preferred to experience proceedings from a safe distance on the other side of the window. And performances with dancer/ choreographer Jennie Dodd. All the while also keeping up his 'pure noise' credentials by performing a few times with infamous sonic brutalist NOMEX and coaxing original COUM TRANSMISSIONS member Foxtrot Echo out of retirement.
A more mature and mellow DK720 has surfaced perhaps we'll call this phase 3. Painting again but on canvas rather than gallery floors he has recently been collaborating with Albert Oehlen. Their joint collage has hung in the Whitechapel Gallery, UK and in Germany. Albert asked DK720 to come and DJ at the Düsseldorf art academe for his students. DK720 and drunken art students proved to be an incendiary mix and the room was destroyed by the students as "DJ-720" spun vintage English punk 7"s and breakcore 12"s. Jason has told us he was "mortified and amused in equal measure" on seeing the student riot. DK720 also helped provide a live soundtrack for the Le Dernier Cri film Religions Sauvages at the ICA. As well as his ongoing solo bursts Jason is currently playing with Vitamin B12
The Future for Deepkiss 720 ? American Tapes will release a single sided LP of a one string bass guitar collaboration with Wolf Eye's John Olson. He'll finish mixing and release a "successful" improvisation with Patrizia Olivia aka Madame P. A recording session with drum and bass legend Henry Collins aka Shitmat? …and possibly a European Tour???
