Influences
On the short list: The Beatles (and John Lennon in particular, on so many levels), The Kinks, David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen are really the big four. As a guitarist I suppose Keef would be my main influence, but overall there have been so, so many others. Every note I've ever heard has nudged me in one way or another. 20's jazz, Big band, rockabilly, British Invasion and Motown, glam rock and Philly soul, the original late 70's punk and new wave bands, the 80's indie/college bands, alt country and chamber pop, not to mention the many, many talented musicians I've had both the pleasure and honor of playing with over the years, all resonate. And the list keeps growing every day.
Some of the songwriters who are still knocking me out on a regaular basis today: Rufus Wainwright, Nellie McKay, Lucinda Williams, Ron Sexsmith, Regina Spektor, Jeff Tweedy, Marah's Dave and Serge Bielanko, Graham Parker, Joe Jackson, Tom Waits and the miraculous Bob Dylan. Damn!
Sounds Like
Aw, man, I don't know. To borrow from a friend: you tell me.
I wrote my first song when I was nine. My friends, Paul and Johnny (and how jealous was I that my name wasn't John), and I had decided to form a group that Easter break (and yes, we actually called it "Easter" break back then! Man, those wild and crazy 60's!). The fact that none of us knew how to play a note did nothing to deter us. We each loved the Beatles and would lip sync little concerts for Paul's mom in their basement, replete with psychedlic lighting effects courtesy of whatever colored light bulbs we could get our hand on. Unsurprisingly, Paul always wanted to be Paul, while Johnny and I would each "call" John – if I got John first, he'd opt for Ringo; if he got John, I'd be George. So we picked a name, the Swingers, after a box of Swingers powdered doughnuts, and set about "writing" songs. I nicked the title of my debut effort from the chocolate bunny I'd received that Sunday (had quite a thing for food-related names, didn't I?), "Aunt Fopsy". I should mention here that it wasn't until I was well into my thirties that I got the whole Flopsy/Peter Cottontail connection. The lyrics, in toto: "Aunt Flopsy, Aunt Flopsy, I can see you're lonely and I want to help." Sing twice, insert Beatley scream, sing guitar solo, third verse same as the first. What'd you expect? I was nine, for cryin' out loud. Thirty-nine years later here we are. You fill in the blanks.

Ever wondered what to do in the event of a nuclear threat?
A while ago I found stuff that inspired me to make this film:
Living Under the Shadow of the Nuclear Umbrella
Both artistic (ensure you get the background music!) and educational, it primarily comprises official British government civil defence advice.
Though source materials are quite aged, much remains relevant today.
