Life in general. Whether it is work, tv., family or friends, everything around us has an impact on who we are.
The world helps shape our lives, we all enter the place the same way, naked kicking and screaming... How we leave it is often beyond our control, but what we do while we are here is what really matters, and that is what influences who we are and what we become, and how we will be remembered.
To list my musical influences will only serve to help certain people unfairly pigeonhole and catagorise this music without even sampling what I have to offer. It makes more sense to make those people listen, and decide for themselves.
I grew up on Glam Rock, Bowie, Kiss, Bon Jovi, T-Rex, REO Speedwagon, Whitesnake... but what I write while it reflects many of these influences, also demonstrates the fact that I did eventually grow up, my tastes matured, and I eventually listened to everything from Classical to Jazz, Funk to Disco, even some very unusual world percussion based music. Sounds Like
Deja Vu is defined in Merriam-Websters Dictionary as; a feeling that one has seen or heard something before.
Who do we sound like? Everyone and No-one at the same time!
I don't try to sound like or copy anyone, but it is almost impossible for comparisons to be completely avoided.
Hence the name "Deja Vu"
Unless as a performer / artist you have lived under a rock, somewhere extremely remote, sheltered and totally devoid of any musical input throughout your entire life, chances are that even your most obscure sounding song is going to be tainted or flavoured by the artists you grew up listening too. Their music is a part of who you are!
I write and play this music for my own enjoyment, because I like it. If you enjoy it also then feel free to join me on this musical journey, and spread the word. I'd love other people to appreciate my efforts, but whether that happens is largely a matter of luck, Will they even know I exist? Will they get the chance to listen in the first place? I know the product is very marketable, so now I just need to learn how that is done.
Deja Vu, at this time is a solo project of Ken McMahon, simply due to the fact it is near on impossible to find the right guys and girls to complete the project. I know they are out there somewhere, but since many musos in WA work in the mines they are not always available, and I need full time guys to make the project viable.
Otherwise it makes more sense to simply market my music in MP3 format, and not have to rely on other musicians at all. I'd much rather be working live than sitting here in my studio writing and recording music that I'll never get to perform in front of a crowd with a real band!
Why Ken chose the name Deja Vu is simple, I never wanted to be a soloist to begin with, and I want a real band of musicians not just a group of session people playing this music on call. The name Deja Vu is always familiar, I mean look at the number of hits this page has had with no details at all to mention on it! People just stumble upon it every day, so why not use that fact to generate a fanbase?
So if any musos male or female, out there in Perth WA like what I am doing, and think you can handle the gig drop me a line.
Everything here was performed written and recorded at home by Me, Myself and I.
Luckily I am not suffereing from multiple personality disorder or they'd be argueing over who gets to go first in the list. For the time being it is all about ME!
I am not the greatest of musicians on the planet, so if I can nail the various instrumental parts I have recorded, then a dedicated Bassist, Drummer, Keyboard Player... should be able to do it with their eyes closed.
As long as you have decent gear, decent skills, and are not a total pain in the arse to work with I'd love to hear from you.
My other Myspace page will now be used primarily to show the softer side of my music. Things like Acoustic tracks, Ballads, maybe a bit of Jazz...
This page is going to be more aimed at delivering my Rockier music. The stuff where I get to play the guitar loud and heavy, scream my lungs out occassionally, and where the drums will be more intricate than the standard 1,2,3,4 simplicity currently plagueing the monochrome music industry at large. The old fashioned styles of rock where a guitar solo or drum solo is not out of place, and where the musicians involved don't spend the entire gig staring at the shoe-laces, scared that they might actually catch the eye of somebody in the audience and die of embarrasment!
No that does not mean I will be doing stuff in weird timings, or anything that requires extra-ordinary musicianship skills, but the musicians involved will need to be better than typical pub rockers tend to be. eg. If a drummer comes in with ideas that are workable, then my view is, as long as it doesn't screw it up, go for it!
When Deja Vu eventually gets together as a working entity, the music covered live will include the ballads, Funkier material, and anything else the band can put into the repertoire, but for now at least My vision of this page is to keep it focused on the rockier material I am writing and recording.
I intend marketing the music under the name Deja Vu, so if anyone out there has any ideas of where to start (ie how to get onto I-tunes....) I'd love the advice, and hopefully in the not too distant future this will become more than a one man rock project, and it may actually start making some real headway in the industry.
