About me: DELL'ARTE INTERNATIONAL is the North American center for the exploration, development, training and performance of the actor-creator. This year we celebrate 34 years in Blue Lake, where students from around the world train among the majestic redwoods and rugged beauty of California’s North Coast. We are the only institution in the U.S. offering a full-time professional actor training program in physical theatre, through a one-year certificate program, and an accredited three-year MFA in Ensemble-Based Physical Theatre. Over the past 30 years we have attracted an international faculty and student body and trained performers from Europe, South and South East Asia, the Middle East, Australia, and North and South America. We also offer summer workshops, open training sessions, and Study Abroad programs in Bali and Denmark.
WHAT WILL YOU FIND AT DELL'ARTE INTERNATIONAL? Intense physical training to develop the expressive capabilities of the actor; the study of mask, clown, melodrama, and commedia; and the process of making theatre. The only MFA in Ensemble-Based Physical Theatre in the US. The three year MFA program runs concurrently with our one-year certificate-granting Professional Training Program. Both are in session from October till mid-June. Actors training to be responsive and spontaneous with their imaginations, their minds and their bodies. Dell'Arte International takes the actor beyond the role of interpreter of a director's vision or playwright's words (the Actor/Interpreter); at Dell'Arte, the actor is fundamental to the creation of theatre (the Actor/Creator).
THE DELLARTE COMPANY has been a company at the forefront of the ensemble theater movement for more than 30 years. Employing and revitalizing traditional physical theatre forms to explore contemporary concerns, Dell’Arte develops original works of theatre through an ensemble process and has performed at international festivals in the United States, Europe, Scandinavia, South America and Canada. Always exploring the work of the actor-creator, Dell'Arte has devised highly experimental touring pieces such as PARADISE LOST as well as imaginative family theatre such as LAND OF THE GRASSHOPPER SONG, and large-scale "theatre of place" spectacles at its annual summer Mad River Festival. In 2004, the company premiered SHADOW OF GIANTS, an original drama about tree-sitting in Northern California, and in 2005 toured its contemporary adaptation of Moliere's The Miser titled THE GOLDEN STATE. Most recently, Dell’Arte was involved in two major collaborations: TARTUFFE, with Marin Theatre Company, and an international collaboration with Jomfru Ane Teatret of Denmark, producing THE LIAR, a re-imagining of Henrik Ibsen’s PEER GYNT.
Who I'd like to meet: The Professional Training Program (PTP) is open to all performers, with or without a college degree, who are committed to acquiring the approach, education and skills needed to move forward as actor-creators. U.S. and international students are encouraged to apply.
Our goal is to train a new generation of theatre artists whose primary interest is the formation of new companies of actor-creators working in the ensemble model. In addition to the creation of new ensembles, we expect not only to continue our very successful rate of placement for graduates from our current Professional Training Program, but also to add to it the placement of our MFA graduates as performers and instructors in theatre departments at colleges and universities in the U.S. and around the world.
Every year the Students in Dell'Arte's Professional Training program go to two communities in rural Northern California. They set up camp for up to 10 days and create an original piece of theater inspired by the community. Check out the video below to see the Class of 2004's experience.

Video documentation of a performance piece by my friend Nate Kassel who rode around on his bike slapping high-fives to people who were trying to hail taxi cabs in NYC. Enjoy!
