This is Speedo Harmonica Jones, and this site is a tribute to my good friend and the man whom I considered to be the worlds greatest blues and soul singer,Delmar Mighty Mouth Evans. The sad thing I dont know if Delmar is alive or dead.I do know that he had a massive stroke in 1995 and has not surfaced on the L.A. music scene since that time.Anybody knowing any information, please leave a message on this website.Meantime here is what I know of his biography.
On the liner notes to Johnny Otis great record "Cold Shot",he claims Delmar came from Louisiana. From what Mighty Mouth told me he was raised in his grandmothers brothel in Milwaukee. The first we hear of him musically, is he claims to have sung with the Chicago based vocal group The Esquires and sung on their hit record "'Get On Up And Get Away".This would have been in the mid sixties.
In 1968,Delmar found himself out in L.A. and hooked up with the legendary Johnny Otis.In 1968,along with 14 Year old Shuggie Otis,Johnnys son,Delmar cut 2 historic and incredible blues records,"Cold Shot",and" Snatch and the Poontangs",an x rated album that was light years ahead of its time. These records changed my life forever.I had the pleasure of catching the Johnny Otis Show at the Ann Arbor Blues Festival in 1973 and Delmars performance at that festival was mind boggling. There were a lot of good blues singers at the festival but none moved me the way Delmar did.
Our paths were to cross in 1979 when i happened to be on a business trip to Los Angeles.Somehow a musician friend of mine gave me Johnny Otis's phone number. At the time Johnny was pastor at the Landmark Community Church in Central L.A.When I went down to meet him,who was there but the church deacon,Delmar Mighty Mouth Evans.I immediately hugged my idol and toldl him I am his biggest fan.I wouldnt even have attempted singing if it wasnt for him.He says if your my biggest fan ,tell me the lines to the last verse of "Sitting Here All Alone".Without beating an eyelash,I whip out the lines,"Ooo wee I aint gonna do that no more,Cause everytime I do it you see it makes my weewee sore"He says god damn you are my biggest fan.We did a series of gigs in L.A.In Oct.of 1979 he came back to N.Y and we did a series of dates together.
In 1984 he came to NYC and cut my first record with me along with Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown and Peter Malick. Some of those historic recordings have just been released on my "Blues From The Archives Vol.2"record available through cdbaby.com.Delmar kept in touch with me throughout the years and I was supposed to go out to L.A. and play with him just before he had his stroke in 1995.I spoke to him once just after that time and he sounded horrible.I dont know if he could ever sing again. Here the story gets wierd.
Peter Malick claims he heard from one of his friends that Delmar passed away around 1998 or 1999.I did an extensive search to find an obituary for him and couldnt come up with anything.I emailed Johnny Otis and Johnny replied he lost contact with him and has no idea of his whereabouts or wether he is alive or dead. This website is a tribute to a great friend and great singer.Once again,if anyone knows anything leave a message on this website.
