Del Noah and the Mt. Ararat Finks was formed out of the belief that original songs could still be written and performed in the hot rod and surf vocal music genre without strictly rewriting the masters. The band was named from the theory (put forth by a number of scolars) that Noah invented surf and hot rod culture with his supercharged ark. Concepted in 1990, organized in 1991 and first gigged in 1992, Del Noah's first lineup included Brent (Pivot Foots, Baker Brothers, nowadays theFleagles, the Henpeckers) on vocals/guitar, Vince (El Grupo Sexo, Bazooka, since then more groups than you can shake a stick at including the likes of Mike Watt and Carlos Guitarlos, and currently Downbeats, Atomic Sherpas, Ghidorah) on sax, Steeve (Swamp Zombies, Tiki Tones, Trucker Up) on bass and Jeff (Sliders, Boardwalkers, Insect Surfers, Huntington Cads, Surfaris, Mighty Kegmens a million other surf bands) on drums. Steeve and Jeff departed in 1996, replaced by Blair (Pivot Foots, many others) and Mudd (LBC punk pioneers the Falling Idols, many others) initially, then Blair moved to guitar/keyboards and Eric (Sublime, LB Short Bus) joined on bass. Other lineups have included David (Reverbrockets) on bass, Rosann (Fleagles, Henpeckers, Controllers, Rotters) on drums, Todd on sax, and numerous others. The original lineup of Del Noah put out a 4-song vinyl EP "Big Sounds of Del Noah" on Dionysus Records in 1995. The five-man electrical lineup put out the 1998 CD "Blower Explosion!" on Skunk (currently out of print, but hopefully soon back in) featuring songs such as "Amish Drag Buggy" and "Sasquatch on a Snowmobile." Both of those had cover art by the great Shag. Many other comps have included Del Noah cuts (including Shots in the Dark, Hot Rods to Hell Vol. 2, many others), and there will be another new Del Noah CD some time soon, featuring "Mini Bike Jamboree," "The Lonely Bultaco" and other newer songs.

Del Noah, if you're anywhere near Hollywood you'd dig coming to the Egyptian Theater tomorrow night (Friday, March 30th, 7:30) where I'll be hosting a "Beatnik Beach" film night, the main feature being Curtis Harrington's 1961 flick NIGHT TIDE, starring Dennis Hopper and Linda Lawson. Curtis and Dennis will be doing Q&A. Then we got two shorts from Venice during the early '60s, and a one hour slide show of L.A.'s Beat coffeehouses and jazz joints hosted by the Dumb Angel co-editors, Brian Chidester and myself... -- Domenic Priore
