About me: Hello, Emerald Coast! My name is Del Stone Jr., deputy managing editor of the Northwest Florida Daily News and the newspaper's unofficial tropical cyclone enthusiast! My fascination with these powerful storms began in August 1969 when my family moved to a home one street removed from Choctawhatchee Bay. Two weeks later Hurricane Camille struck the Mississippi coast and I was able to see firsthand the devasting effects tropical storms and hurricanes exert on our lives. Since then I've weathered storms like Hurricane Agnes, which unleashed a deadly volley of tornadoes on Florida and flooded the Northeast; Hurricane Eloise, which blasted ashore near Sandestin in 1975; Hurricane Elena, the storm that struck twice in 1985; Tropical Storm Alberto, which flooded the Southeast in 1994; the notorious duo, Erin and Opal, in 1995; the terrible Ivan in 2004; and Dennis in 2005. Over the years I have enjoyed tracking these storms, reading about their statistics and comparing their tracks to the forecasts. It is not my intent with this page to supplant the information you receive from meteorologists and civil authorities. Rather, what I hope to do is provide a forum for like-minded weather enthusiasts. When the center line of the forecast track crosses Northwest Florida, we ALL become weather enthusiasts!
