Consider this an open letter to anyone who's interested in the Demencha Magazine project in any shape or fashion. I started Demencha Magazine in 2004 from my parents basement when I was 19. But before then, I'd always enjoyed writing (and drawing) from an early age. All throughout my tenure in public school (Hickman Mills and Ray-Pec), I would've rather completed writing assignments than take a "fill in the blank" test. In middle school, I picked up my first issue of The Source and began learning about hip hop, and I idolized the writers who wrote for The Source. Soon after I graduated high school in 2002, I found myself at Longview Community College. While there, it was obvious that I wasn't going to be able to pass any math classes, but I knew that if I wasn't persistent in getting a degree I could at least dally around with various classes in the liberal arts building and try to find something that sparked my interest enough to pursue as a career. I found myself putting in long hours after dark at school, tweaking my articles for the campus paper. At about this time, I dropped The Source and got hip to URB Magazine, which seemed like a better fit for me, considering I enjoyed both hip hop and dance music. A year and a half later, I bounced out of town and went to school at Pittsburg State in southeast Kansas. It was by far the worst experience of my life, thusfar. I may go into detail sometime in the future, but not now. But while I was there, I traveled back across state line to Joplin, MO and was hired by The Joplin Globe to write album reviews in their alternatve weekly subsidary paper. I see this experience as turning a negative into a positive. I came back home about two months later, but continued to write for The Globe from my parents basement, once again. One night, with a whirl wind of ideas circulating in my brain, I decided that I wanted to start a music magazine. And I wanted to call it Demencha. (For a lot of us, what we read on in our papers and see on our screens can shape reality. By creating a magazine soley based around covering local hip hop and dance culture, I'm offering readers an alternatvie reality. Hence, Demencha,) This (KC) isn't a hip hop town or a DJ town, but the plan was to do my best to cover artists in those realms who are talented and deserve to be covered and this is what keeps me going still today (though we have a ton of work to do). The first issue was published in 2004, but it wasn't under the name Demencha. I'll keep that issue a secret with those few people who still might have a copy in a box in their garage. At this time, I had just started collecting records and I distributed copies of the magazine on flyer racks at local record stores like Recycled Sounds, Music Exchange and Deep Fix. I released another issue, under the Demencha tag this time, soon after. After turning 21 in 2005, I started exploring inner Kansas City and it's live music scenes. I was recruited by phocas.net to cover the local dance scene that year. About a year later, I moved on and featured local turntablist master Joc Max on the cover of the Spring 2006 issue of Demencha Magazine. That summer, I was hired by the Pitch Weekly in Kansas City, MO where I wrote about local DJs and hip hop artists until February 2008, when I left the Pitch to dedicate myself to Demencha Magazine. (Note: it is a common misconception that I left the Pitch on bad terms). The content in all three issues that I had put out until this point was done by myself, including artwork, photography and writing. I knew that I needed a team of people to help the magazine realize its full potential. I met and consulted with former Flavor Pak magazine editor, Jeremy McConnell, who has been a big brother in the Demencha effort for the past two years or so. Under his guidance, and alongside a solid crew of contributing writers, I present the new, invigorated, dedicated Demencha Magazine (and demencha.com) effort starting with the summer 2008 issue, featuring DJ Slugo and the Hip Hop Academy on dual sided covers. We will release the magazine quarterly until we're ready to bump up production frequency to bi-monthly. But I'll keep it 100 with you. You will not find any publication or website in the Kansas City area like ours.
Who I'd like to meet: people who want to write about music. people who are making music. people who love music to the point that rarely a minute passes their day without listening to it.
