Dena is a sweet, fun-loving, carefree kind of girl, with a dark side attached to her. When she was a little girl she used to spend most of her time stealing the attention away from her family and friends and not much has changed today. By the of age 3 she would sing for any camera, mostly Christian songs that her parents always had playing in the house. By age 4 she began taking dance lessons and competitive gymnastics shortly after that.
"My parents gave me the choice between figure skating or gymnastics, and I chose gymnastics because at that age my dream was to be the pink power ranger...and I thought I was, haha." Hard work was something she was never afraid of and that started with school. Always striving for straight A's, not only in the classroom, but in everything she did. Between the dancing, cheerleading and gymnastics she could easily kick all of the boys butts in gym class, including her teachers.
By the time she entered the 6th grade she had a new passion and she made sure that everyone knew about it. She realized that her love of singing was more than just a hobby, it was going to be her life. "I always loved singing, but I was really focused on my gymnastics. Until one day when I started watching MTV and saw Britney Spears' first video "Baby One More Time". At that moment, I said to myself, that it exactly what I want to do."
Along with her new confidence came a lot of jealousy and harassment in school. "I was a pretty shy girl, I couldn't ask to go to the bathroom during class, but I'd belt out a Christina Aguilera song on the playground in front of my teachers and peers. I would perform a Britney song at all my middle school dances and get money thrown at me. I was always fearless when it came to performing."
Eventually she decided to give up the gymnastics and cheerleading and asked her parents for vocal lessons instead. At the same time she intensified her dancing skills by taking all types of dance, competing and earning tons of medals. In 2005, she competed at Access Broadway in Syracuse, New York against dancers from all over the country for the title of "Access Broadway's Triple Threat." Having to sing, dance and act in front of a camera, she won the title. "I was completely shocked and overwhelmed. I was just thankful to be able to participate after injuring my ankle that weekend during rehearsals. It was an experience I'll never forget."
That same year, Dena met up with local producer Jeff DaBella, and together they became a songwriting machine. Writing and recording her first EP "The Way You Look At Me", immediately lead to her first LP, "Mirror." She had the opportunity to shoot two music videos and has performed hundreds of shows in the past couple years promoting those records on her own. "I did a lot of shows at carnivals, coffee houses, casinos, and a lot of private events too. After the show, I'd go back to the studio and record no matter how late it was."
A few of her most memorable shows began with opening for the American Idol Stars. Following her set Constantine Maroulis pitched how great Dena was to the audience without any prompting. Another highlight of hers was playing the Lockheed Martin Family Appreciation Day (a private event). Playing in front of 10,000 people and as soon as she came off the stage, new fans of all ages lined up for autographs and pictures til the event was over. She also had the opportunity to be a guest back-up vocalist with national-act 'Wheatus'. But her biggest accomplishment so far was in 2007 when one of her songs made it onto the same radio compilation disc as Annie Lennox, Nelly, Sugababes, Duran Duran, and Britney Spears. Her remake of Carole Kings "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" got into heavy rotation on radio stations across Europe.
"As for now and into the future, there is a lot more in store for the world to hear. It wont be much longer until you see a whole different side to me. My dreams of making music and sharing it with the world will never stop. If you don't know me, then get ready to know me!"
