“The US Embassy is thrilled to be able to host Dengue Fever for a free concert in Phnom Penh on May 13, 2010, as part of our celebration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and the United States,” said Carol A. Rodley, U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia. “I cannot think of a better way to kick of this celebration than to have an acclaimed American band performing music influenced by some of the great Cambodian artists of the 1960s. Sinn Sisamouth, Ros Serey Sothea, Pan Ron and many other artists perished more than 30 years ago under the Khmer Rouge, but their musical legacy lives on to inspire and delight new generations of listeners, not just in Cambodia but around the world.”
Brothers Ethan (keyboards) and Zac (guitar) Holtzman started Dengue Fever in 2001 when they discovered they shared a love for the Cambodian pop music of the 60s. After adding sax man David Ralicke (Beck/Brazzaville), drummer Paul Smith and bassist Senon Williams, they went looking for a Cambodian singer. Enter Chhom Nimol, who performed regularly for the King and Queen of Cambodia. Her powerful singing - marked by a luminous vibrato that adds exotic ornamentations to her vocal lines - and hypnotic stage moves based on traditional dances complimented the band’s driving Cambodian/American sound.
Dengue Fever is currently in the process of writing, demoing and fleshing out music for the band’s fourth full-length album of new material to be released in 2011. The band is set to launch a new online store at the end of April.
ABOUT DENGUE FEVER
Dengue Fever (http://www.myspace.com/denguefevermusic) is Chhom Nimol – who sang regularly for the King and Queen of Cambodia - Ethan Holtzman (keyboards), Zac Holtzman (guitar), David Ralicke (horns), Senon Williams (bass) and Paul Smith (drums). The band’s music has been featured in a number of film and television shows including CITY OF GHOSTS, MUST LOVE DOGS, BROKEN FLOWERS, HBO’s hit series TRUE BLOOD and twice on Showtime’s, WEEDS. They have released three albums, Dengue Fever, Escape From Dragon House, Venus On Earth and released their DVD/CD soundtrack to the documentary Sleepwalking Through The Mekong on April 14, 2009.
The band’s eponymous debut was mostly covers of Cambodian classics. Their second album, “Escape From Dragon House”, written almost entirely by the band, was more psychedelic, freer, looser and more experimental than the debut. Their next release, 2008’s “Venus on Earth”, consisted entirely of original material, with several songs performed in English, furthering the band’s overall goal to fuse American and Cambodian styles. In 2009, the band earned kudos for the DVD/CD soundtrack release of the documentary film “Sleepwalking Through The Mekong”, which chronicled their 2005 trip to Nimol’s homeland during the water festival. They also wrote and performed in front of live audiences a commissioned soundtrack for the 1925 silent film classic “The Lost World”.
Earlier this year, the band curated a collection of classic Cambodian rock songs from the pre-Khmer Rouge era called “Dengue Fever Presents: Electric Cambodia”.

I'm looking at video footage I shot at the Davis, CA show back in July and thinking of the fun I had that day, it's been making me smile amidst a rather unfulfilled, tiresome, and melancholy day. Thanks for being awesome and for the fun times. Love you guys and gal.

Gah, I'm disappointed I don't get to see you guys perform at Outside Lands, but I'll be there for one of the screenings of Sleepwalking Through the Mekong! :-D Anyway, you should definitely try to get your songs onto one of Quentin Tarantino's movie soundtracks. Most of the time when I have some of my friends listen to your music, first thing they normally say is, "They sound like they belong in a Quentin Tarantino movie." And scene.
Hello from France, I love your music and I hope you will come soon in France for concerts. That's so amazing to see a band with an apsara singing in cambodian on great music. Regards Bruno
I just watched Sleepwalking through the Mekong and loved it - a very moving film. Please come back and play the UK again soon. I just saw that your film is screening at the Green Man festival so I will watch it there - it is just a shame that you can't be there too to play!
