Here's a few reviews--------> "Denise James is a singer/songwriter whos not afraid of her guitar. James Its Not Enough to Love delves into more textures and sounds than many music-first bands can do, all without losing the thread of her self-revealing lyrics. Love Has Got Me Crying Again picks up a touch of golden-aged country twang and jangly pop that places James in an odd, but remarkably comfortable position between Patsy Cline and Joni Mitchell. No More Goodbyes calls up a bit of California pop, circa The Mommas and the Papas, but serves it with the sort of blue-plate diner charm that recalls Cline or Petula Clark fondly. Other times, James sounds like a repressed American version of Holly Golightly. The loping beat and faraway guitar lend Absolutely Sad a smoky, after-hours atmosphere that thrives on the sounds of surf/garage guitar tones and the lonesome warmth of aged vinyl. Most strange of all, traces of Motown girl groups think The Shirelles and early years Supremes bleed into the French-born, Detroit-raised singers songs, most visibly in Dont Let Her Go This Time, which features a remarkably restrained, yet soulful lead vocal over chiming guitars that put James voice in the middle of the thick.
Lyrically, James has much more in common with the put-upon Cline than Golightlys lets-get-even feistiness. From the title track and Hold on this Time to the weepy Love Has Got Me Crying Again, James teary cynicism shines. Shes been put through the wringer on Its Not Enough to Love but knows, as Buddy Holly put it, thats all part of the game. Because of that, she avoids the self-pity that usually accompanies singer-songwriters with restraint that makes this album nicely palatable. A True classic." -Matt Schild/Aversion.com
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"This band has a 'French Pop' sound. Denise has been on several His Name Is Alive albums and was the lead singer for both the Dirteaters and the Jills. Denise's voice may just be Detroit's greatest untapped natural resource. Not that James has hidden herself away -- quite the contrary, actually. She's the voice behind the greviously underappreciated Dirteaters and has appeared on numerous His Name Is Alive recordings. But James has stepped out on her own with music that's simultaneously intercontinental (in the Serge Gainsbourg sense) and decidedly Midwestern (in the high lonesome northwoods sense)." -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"***** 5 out of 5 Stars-Another great out of Detroit. Denise James is yet further proof of the wonderful things happening musically in Detroit, Michigan these days. Though more in the veign of Saturday Looks Good To Me or Pas/Cal than the White Stripes, James produces a solid effort here. I challenge the critical reviewers to a better pop record these days. James vocals are astounding and a delite to hear. To me, only track 9 gets tiresom. The Ventures surf-like instrumental is a little tedious. the rest is sheer excellence making up for the sag on track nine, making this a five star album and worthy of your money. -Amazon.com Customer Reviewer: A. Do you like Indie-Pop and Quentin Tarantino films? Then youll love Denise.
Her second solo album, Its Not Enough To Love is full of reverb, bounce, sweet melancholy and fits better by the listen like a perfect two-piece swimsuit for surfin at the beach. Thanks to the expert sound engineering of Jim Diamond, the late 60s-early 70s feel of the album is so clear-cut that you wouldnt even know it was released last February (2004). Seriously, these tracks are right out of Pulp Fiction.
Bittersweet melodies flow through the entire album from the chill, but upbeat Hold On This Time to the more reflective Absolutely Sad. Her song writing is excellent and her guitar playing is superb. Im not a huge fan of instrumentals on albums with more of a pop feel as they usually tend to be on the shallow repetitive side, but Just Like That is a definite indie-pop instrumental masterpiece (as well as one of my favorites on the album).
Big into the Detroit music scene for many years, she has been a part of recordings from bands like His Name is Alive and Willo Tha Wiz. Matthew Smith of The Volebeats has produced both of her solo albums. He sings backing vocals on Come Home To Me that blend in so well tonally and musically with Ms. James that you hardly notice him. Track Picks: (3) Love Has Got Me Cryin Again, (2) Come Home to Me, (7) No More Goodbyes, (9) Just Like That. (May be related to: The Ventures, The Mamas and the Papas, Nancy Sinatra, Erin McKeowen, The Volebeats.) 4 out of 5 stars, baby. -Heather McCreery/rainydawg.org
