Influences
A lot of our sound comes from a mesh of Motown, Britpop, punk and self loathing. More specifically: Wedding Present, Dead Kennedys, Wannadies, Eels, Weezer, Ben Kweller, Blur, Ministry, Ottis Redding and awkward social events.
Sounds Like
Energetic alternative/ punk with pop sensibilities.
Dennis Law Jr. is the Twenties-age angst proclamations of the angry Proclaimer Danny Eccles, the ever-evolving drumming of Mod turned Shoegazer, turned Punk, turned turner Thomas Sutherland, the Tyrannosaurus grooves of Blue not of the Blue man group but of this group, and the carnivorous pickings of Alistair – Ali, Boom Ba Hey! – McKellar. Dennis Law Sr. is too old to be reading this so we’ll just ignore that old, mangle-brained fucker…
Infuences include the likes of Weezer when they were good, Otis Redding when he was alive and Dead Kennedys when they wanted to kill you. This heady bru creates a sound that pleases the pop sensibilities of any sensible pop fan while also challenging the palate of those who are challenged in the palate. Lyricist Danny openly admits to the ‘gay’ feelings he sometimes has to put in his words, but the overall feeling when listening to the band is one of celebration. Yes, celebrate your gay feelings through the jangly-indie of ‘Sympathy Card’ (sung by Ali). Face up to the unrequited love of ‘Centipide’ but say ‘fuck you lassie, I’m dancing to a braw band, and no thinking about you’. And try being normal to the Frank Black-isms of ‘Normal Song’ (clue: you won’t be normal, but realise all over again why you’re weird).
So, once again I say join Dennis Law Jr on their quest for ab-normality. They won’t leave you well-dressed, coiffured or washed. But they will leave you grinning like a weirdo from ear to ear. Just try not to grin like that on public transport, or when waiting for public transport or when a pretty lady makes eye contact with you.
