................Those are just a few of the names that The Denver Drum Collective has been able to help bring to Denver for very successful and educational drum clinics. Who's next? Help me to decide in '08!..............................
Greetings!
I've spoken to many of you about this crazy idea I have of getting a
group of drummers together to talk shop. Well, I'm happy to say that
things are (finally) starting to move in the right direction.
The purpose of the Denver Drum Collective (clever, huh?) is to build
a strong community of local drummers who support and educate each
other. This is NOT a worlds fastest drummer competition nor an
undiscovered drummer contest. This is a very organic very relaxed
attempt at networking, community, and friendship. Pure and simple.
I was reading a Modern Drummer interview with Ben Riley--jazz great,
and he mentioned that back in the day, it would be nothing to see five
drummers going out to hear another drummer. That they always hung out
and exchanged ideas and the music became strong because they all had
their own approaches but shared them with others. I know that some of
the drummers on the receiving end of this email are excellent marching
band guys, and others are great jazzers, and others are novices
(that's where I fall!) but everyone has their particular strength, and
I would like for us to share those strengths with each other and in
doing so, promote Denver as a great drumming community.
I am fortunate to
have secured The Walnut Room as a venue to host the meetings--and with
that we have the ability to screen DVDs, have percussion circles (not
of the hippie variety) and eventually host masterclasses/clinics. If
there is someone out there who's had dreams of being a clinician,
here's your chance to show us what you've got. If somebody has
explored non-western rhythmic ideas/percussion, please bring it in and
demonstrate. If somebody has a knack for recording drums, share your
thoughts.
As an added incentive to get this off the ground, I would love to
explore the opportunity of giving back to the community, particularly
school music programs via benefit shows or other means. Again, any
recommendations are welcome!
Please pass this on to anyone who may be interested and feel free to
contact me with any additional questions.
