His music is best described as New York, Motown and Nashville meeting up on the Canadian prairies. In January. With beer.
Producer-singer-songwriter Deon Wysocki delivers hooky, mature and upbeat melodies full of rich instrumentation drawing on influences like the Bee Gees, Hall and Oates and The Police.
He also plays every instrument and sings all vocals on his self-produced recordings.
Press and fans alike have coined his sound “quirky retro pop-rock.” It’s a label that doesn’t quite seem to fit into the scheme of things in Winnipeg’s music scene.
But that’s fine by him. Nearly all of his songs tell us stories of not fitting in and rejection, as well as growing up in Winnipeg's tough North End Point Douglas district, friends lost and love learned.
The Guess Who, Canada’s greatest rock legends, were mostly from the North End, too.
Through his songs, Deon aims to bring us back to those roots by reminding us of what he feels truly makes Winnipeg music great – taking risks. “It’s something we’ve forgotten how to do because we’ve been pretending to be Van-Francisco far too long,” says Deon.
In 2008, Deon hit the stage after a seven year hiatus (he was busy producing and helping babysit best bud and Motown hopeful Remy Shand) and delivered the highly acclaimed “No Film” album, which took nearly five years to compile and record.
Today, he is pleased to introduce “Mello Hello”, inspired by loyal fans thirsty for more of his piano and reggae influenced songs. Since its release in January 2009, the album has garnered several US licensing deals and is Deon’s best selling CD to date.
"Mellow Hello" is real Winnipeg – hardened but humble, wise yet unpretentious. And perhaps a little off to the left. Just where Deon likes to be.
And the dance floor? It’s never been busier.
