depression affects the whole family.

WHO WE ARE:

Founded in January, 2001, Families for Depression Awareness is a non-profit, tax exempt 501 (c) (3) organization, dedicated to helping families recognize and cope with depressive disorders.

Families for Depression Awareness helps families, especially family caregivers and friends, recognize and cope with unipolar and bipolar depression. The organization provides education, outreach, and advocacy to support families and friends. Families for Depression Awareness is made up of families who have lost a family member to suicide or have watched a loved one suffer with depression, with little knowledge about how to help.

WE OFFER:

* Brochures such as the Helping Someone Who is Depressed pamphlet, for families and friends.

* Family and Expert Profiles (interviews with photographs of families with depression and interviews with psychiatric experts).

* Educational seminars and outreach training on depression.

* Advocacy to support families with depression.

* Extensive resources on our web site, www.familyaware.org

WHAT WE DO:

* Family Profiles reduce stigma by showing that people from all walks of life can suffer from depression. Family Profiles are interviews with people diagnosed with depression describing their symptoms, how they cope with the condition, and how their families help them. Families can access the profiles on the web site and e-mail the profiles to other families at risk.

* Promotional activities include e-mail, mailings, and public relations of Family Profiles to families and the media.

* Syndication of Family Profiles to organizations concerned with health, women's issues, and suicide prevention.

* Speaking engagements and conferences.

* Community outreach to schools, police stations, health facilities, religious organizations, employers, and nursing homes.

* Depression awareness workshops with other health and suicide prevention organizations.

* Advocacy to support families with depression.
