Derby Caribbean Carnival (DCC) is run by the Derby West Indian Community Association (DWICA). Through the auspices of DWICA a board has been formed to manage, oversee and coordinate the development of DCC. The carnival has been running since 1975 and takes place annually over two days. It is a professional organisation, with 95% of the artist being paid a fee. Half of the artists who perform are locally based. Its aims are: To enhance and encourage and underpin the importance of ‘Black Arts’ in an often hostile Euro-centric community. To attract a variety of social/cultural groups to the programme and to discover new talents. In 2002/3 it received most of its funding from DWICA, plus funding from Arts Council England ( East Midlands) and a small amount of funding and in-kind support from Derby City Council. It was sponsored by Derbyshire Building Society, Rolls Royce and Western Union The carnival itself did not employ any staff.
