A different kind of festival...
Louisville, Kentucky is known for many things;
The Kentucky Derby, Louisville Slugger, Muhammad Ali and the Humana Festival of New American Plays, to name a few.
And now it is known for something more...
2008 marked the inaugural year of the Derby City Film Festival and will be looked back upon as the year Louisville took a major step in becoming a "go to" location to screen newly produced independent films.
50 independent films were screened at the historic Louisville Memorial Auditorium over the five days of the 2008 festival.
These films included shorts, documentaries and feature films from all over the globe.
19 films were from right here in Louisville, 5 were foreign, and 5 others were World Premieres.
From the beginning the DCFF wanted to distinguish itself from other festivals. Focusing on true independent films and filmmakers rather then celebrities and multi-million dollar Indie-wood films, the DCFF wanted to make sure that those quality films that were made for less the one million dollars were made available to audiences in a theatre at least once.
Credit card advances, family loans, selling plasma, or doing whatever it takes to get your dream and vision to the big screen are the types of films and filmmakers we want to showcase.
Those are true independent films.
While the first year of the festival was a success, with filmmakers from Louisville taking home "Best Short", Best Feature" and Best Of Festival", there is still much more to do. And we can't think of a better place to do it.
The slogan going around is "Why Louisville?" We say "Why Not".
With filmmaker panels, Q&A's, workshops, screenplay contests, poster art contests, and above all NO SUBMISSION FEES, we hope to change the way filmmakers and film lovers view a film festival by keeping the basic love of film first in all we do and present.
So, we encourage you to come and check out "The 'Ville" and the DCFF.
We bet by the time you leave you wonder why every festival doesn't do it this way.
See what you've been missing.
